This is a courtesy message to inform you that both CIRA (.ca) and VeriSign (.com) will implement a price increase by the following amounts, effective September 1st, 2023:

.CA - CAD$1.00
.COM - USD$0.62

As usual, Namespro.ca will increase our price by no more than the amount of the registry increase, without making further profits. The upcoming price hike might impact your plan for renewals / transfers / new registrations. Therefore, we would like to give you a one-month heads-up so you can plan accordingly.

If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact us. We will be more than glad to answer them for you.

Yeah, I've gotta find the time to get it done, but I'm going on a renewal spree soon...

:LOL::ROFLMAO:

@domains , Not everyone is just increasing by $1.00. Some are using this opportunity to jack up their renewal rates. Wonder what the "sponsors" here would be doing.

This price increase could not have come at a worse time.

The economy is tanking, interest rates keep jumping, the job situation is far worse than the (fake) stats attest, and people continue to flood into Canada and create significant stress on our infrastructure, all while the traditional Canadian goal of "owning a house and/or a business" has transformed into a pipe dream.

New home construction will never meet this insane level of demand but high interest rates also creates a terrible atmosphere for new business startups and existing SMBs looking to expand or improve, while obviously aiding the existing billionaires (i.e the people who actually run Canada - Trudeau refers to them as "stakeholders") with their ever-growing monopolies seeking the absolute cheapest mass-labor possible.

It's pretty grim out there for the average Canadian and I think we're just getting started - currently, we're the Titanic catching first sight of the iceberg in the distance...

"Hey," says a random CIRA bean exec with an Arts degree, "Sounds like a great time to crank .CA renewal rates!"

Couldn't have said it better

Here's our blog post about the increases, which was also in our newsletter sent last week.

I'm currently reading this thread regarding the .ca price increase Sept 1st and thought this would be interesting to pass on:

I received this notification from Canspace:

"As of August 18th, 2023, the registration and transfer price for .ca domains will increase to $11.99, and the renewal price will increase to $12.99. All prices are of course always in Canadian dollars.

Note that our goal as always is to be the lowest priced registrar in Canada, and these new prices will - as always - be lower than anywhere else. Clients are also free to renew their domains before August 18th in order to take advantage of the current renewal price of $10.99."

Seems like they are raising their prices two weeks before the official Sept 1st price increase...

They may be a sponsor here, but I think it's appropriate to call them out on this action.

Any thoughts?

The only thing I can think of is it takes time to change all the web references, advertising banners and things that a registrar may have running and Canspace may be implementing the increase early so they can change all those ahead of time and be ready for the actual increase from CIRA.

@CanSpace may be able to shed more light on this though.

Trying to catch their existing customers off guard so they can make an extra $1 per renewal?

This isn’t a cash grab on our part by any means. Just to clarify, for any domain with auto-renew enabled (which is the case for the vast majority of our clients), an invoice will be generated exactly 2 weeks before the renewal date of the domain.

This means that any domain with a renewal date of September 1st will have an invoice generated on August 18th, and a due date of September 1st.

We just specified the date as August 18th so that when clients see an invoice automatically generated on that date (or after) for their auto-renewals with due dates of September 1st or later, they won't be surprised with the new pricing on the invoice.

We won't actually change the pricing for manual domain renewals until the last day of August, so any client who manually orders a domain renewal before September 1st will be able to take advantage of our current pricing.

It was just a bit complicated to explain this all in our email blast (and would make it much less likely that people would read through the whole thing), so we just communicated August 18th to simplify things.

This seems a lot better, but long-winded or not, it should have been in the email.

Lots of people with large domain holdings (i.e. those most affected by the CIRA charitable largesse), especially domain investors, manually go through their domains each month to make sure everything is worth renewing.

Absolutely. We are well aware of our client base with large domain holdings and will reach out to them personally to clarify.

Makes sense, and yeah, probably should have been explained slightly better, but I see completely what you're getting at. I'd have probably said something like "Regardless of invoice dates, only payments received by Aug 31 will qualify for current pricing, payments received Sep 1 or later will be billed the new pricing"

Running an online store myself I can tell you the logistics of a price change can be a challenge. Do you change all prices at the designated time, do you wait until inventory is depleted and you reorder? What are your competitors doing? Where else am I advertised with pricing? What sales do I have active at the moment?

In a retail environment it's always a challenge when change presents itself and two weeks ahead is a reasonable time frame to start making necessary changes so when the target date arrives most things are properly updated.

I am with @CanSpace and @MapleDots - the logistics and decisions of a price change like this are a bit of a nightmare.

It is absolutely a logistical nightmare. We're just trying to ensure there are no surprises for clients here.

The last time this happened we made the mistake of changing our own price at the same time CIRA did. The issue was that all the auto-renewal invoices that had already been generated had the old price, and had already been sent to clients. Because we thought it would be unethical to change the price on an invoice after it had already been sent to clients, we had to just eat that loss.

Clients also sometimes place an order, or request a quote, which they then have 2 weeks to pay. It is possible for a client to place a transfer order for 1000 domains a week before the change for example, but then not actually pay it until after the price change happens, even though they were quoted the old price. Because our prices are so close to CIRAs - particularly when factoring in our own costs, credit card processing fees, etc, this would also incur a loss on our end.

Ultimately we are just trying to cover all of our bases. To be completely candid, the amount of profit we would generate charging an extra $1 on .ca domain renewals for a 2-week period is insignificant. What we are trying to accomplish is just to ensure there are no surprises for anyone.

If we were given a choice, we would much prefer that prices with CIRA stayed the same, and we didn't have to increase ours either.
