With our migration to the Xenforo software our costs per month have gone up considerably.

As you all know we have been paying all expenses for dn.ca for a number of years. We have spent countless hours in developing the community but the server and software costs have gone up significantly. If you would like to make a one time contribution to the site or just buy us a cup of coffee for the countless hours of work we have put in then feel free to contribute.

Contributions can be made via e-transfer to: donate@dn.ca

or via Wise: https://wise.com to pay@dn.ca

Please remember to add your username to the comment of the e-transfer so we can credit the right member.

If not you can always post here and we will connect the dots for you.

Many thanks to those helping out (y)

Just to let you guys know...

  • We have been covering all the costs for about 2 years.
  • We have paid for all webhosting costs.
  • We have had a number of server incidents.
  • We have paid for offsite daily backups.
  • We have a technical / iT guy who charges us monthly and per incident.
  • We just paid a company to convert our database to the new software.
  • We paid the new software company to upload and modify the database.
  • We have monthly Server & Software costs.
  • We continue to back the site up daily offsite.
  • The site runs on 4 domains which require renewal yearly.
  • Needed a second hosting account to store additional images. (paid monthly)
  • Moving forward we must also pay our Xenforo licensing costs.
  • Upgrade our hosting plan as needed to assure correct server storage/data usage.

Any time spent by myself is always at no cost to the community and I have gladly contributed for years past.
If you are so inclined you can always buy me a cup of coffee so I can stay up later and add new features to the board. ;)

Again any contribution you would like to make can be made via e-transfer to: donate@dn.ca

Any thought of doing a paid subscription? For instance, when someone becomes verified, they can do many more things than a non verified user. Could implement that into paid as well or something along those lines.

I was paying $15 a month to NP for a site I no longer post on. Just canceled it. So maybe something along those lines with what they have in place.

I look at it this way. Someone can spend hundreds/thousands per month on TBR’s, I don’t think giving back to a forum that gives so much is too much to ask and also a token of our appreciation for all the work you have put into it. And and as you mentioned, to help with some of the costs.

I would refer to keep it totally voluntary for anyone to contribute.

I did not mind absorbing all the costs so far but quite honestly the costs with these new upgrades are more than I expected so I figured I would allow sponsor areas and donations to help offset some of the costs.

As far as ads go - I still have no plans for any and same goes with member charges.
I would like to get some sponsors though which will be different from ads.

I am totally happy keeping everything voluntary, those people that see value and have spare coffee money will contribute while others who are struggling to pay their renewals will not.

Perhaps make it voluntary, but folks get a badge below their name (like Community Guide, Verified Member, etc.)? (perhaps "Benefactor", or something)
like this idea…or maybe supporter….
And happy to support without recognition as well.

I'd say post here if you've donated and give a permanent badge to anyone who donates $100 or more.

That might be an idea, what would the badge say?

Contributing Member or Donating Member or Benefactor... any more suggestions?

Do we want a badge like the Verified Member badge or something within the profile?

I like something as long as it is low key …like supporter

…I also like the idea of “in the profile” (y)

OK so this is what I came up with...

See the new User Group called " Donating members "

This will appear in their profile:

The DONATED designation gets added to anyone accumulating $100+ in donations to fund the boards development.

It can be done via a single donation or numerous donations over a number of years.
Once the member hits $100 he/she will be added to the donor list and get a donor designation in their profile.

You can look at these two profiles to see how it looks:

Here you can also see how a completely finished profile looks:
(By finished I mean with the "About You" field fully utilized)

I was thinking about this and the Verified Membership is already giving lots of free extras. Depending on future costs if they are not covered I may implement a charge for Verified with all the extra features.

That said right now Verified is free and will continue to be for all members who signed up. In other words, it's an opportunity to get in at no cost. With my new cloud servers all the charges are dependent on page views and storage so I won't have an idea of real costs until about a year has passed and I can look at the full usage stats.

Like I said, I will probably resist that but storage costs money and I already had to get a second server for things I could not upload to cloud.

So in short, anyone verifying now is immune to future charges.

Thank you so much Bill

I just started a nice spreadsheet with the inflows and outflows and I will publish that in the boardroom for voting members to see.

Just waiting to get 12 voting members total.
