Everything related to domains is a big cash grab right now.
Companies that control the domains, or control access to domains, see all the big sales and smell money, so are consistently cranking up prices. But what they don't see (or choose not to see) are the millions upon millions of unsold domains that are a sunk cost + renewals.
There is no question that there will be an economic reckoning that ends up hurting many of these domain-controlling leeches. Just look at Verisign, who increased .COM renewal prices to the tune of 10% a year, and is now complaining that revenues are down and is madly searching for other factors to blame the downturn on.
