[h]Man fined $4,000 for 'liking' defamatory posts on Facebook[/h]

Be very careful what you "like" on Facebook.

A court in Switzerland has convicted a man on several counts of defamation after he "liked" libelous comments on the social media platform.

The court in Zurich found that the man indirectly endorsed and further distributed the comments by using the ubiquitous Facebook (FB, Tech30) "like" button.

The man, who was not named in the court's statement, "liked" several posts written by a third party that accused an animal rights activist of antisemitism, racism and fascism.

In court, the man was not able to prove that the claims were accurate or could reasonably be held to be true.

"The defendant clearly endorsed the unseemly content and made it his own," a statement from the court said.

You know.... funny thing, I am a techno nerd, always have been but I have virtually no social media accounts.

Nobody in my family has ever had a facebook account because I knew early on that it could not be good for a company like that to own so much information.

It still gets me how some blogs and forum sites only have facebook as a login, they do not consider that there are still people on the planet who do not have facebook accounts.

How soon will we here in Canada be faced with something like that? For “liking” a post. Canada is changing by the day it seems and not for the better in my opinion.

It's already here. Not in a legal sense, but in a court of public opinion sense...and there's no defending yourself from that. Court of public opinion = guilty until proven innocent 100% of the time

A B.C. MLA has apologized after ‘liking’ Twitter posts that include the ‘herd immunity’ theory and attacking provincial health officer Dr. Bonnie Henry.

Renee Merrifield is the new MLA for Kelowna-Mission in the Okanagan, and is also the BC Liberals’ health critic.

Some of her recent ‘likes’ on Twitter caught the attention of political columnist and former NDP political strategist Bill Tieleman.
