CIRA election 2023 (2 Viewing)

I ran last year on the member slate, like Frank is currently. It's.... hard. There is very little opportunity for meaningful engagement with voters / CIRA. members.

I think very few people engage with the election forum that CIRA offers, and most people don't have the time or inclination to read through a dozen lengthy candidate statements.

The board member elected last year got the membership list from CIRA (which they are obligated to provide), and emailed everyone. While I find that approach unpalatable, I think it was effective.

My current thinking is that there needs to be another forum for Canadians to engage in discussions around the Internet in Canada, and not just about .ca, although that should be a part of it. Perhaps it's reshaping the Canadian IGF, perhaps it's something new.

I've been thinking about something like that, I know someone that has experience running a forum and he owns a few domain names.

Here's some information from the election forum for those having difficulties voting as posted by Spencer from CIRA with emphasis added by me:

First, I’d like everyone to know that CIRA takes the Board election very seriously. We have been looking into these reports and I can share an update on our findings.

It appears as though the Cloudflare error that a handful of members have been seeing is tied to the way our election system validates membership. To ensure the integrity of the voting system, which only allows active members access the ballot, we validate each membership by checking the domains associated with that membership when a user logs into the voting system. For those few members who have a lot of domains (hundreds or even thousands) this validation process is taking longer than expected resulting in the Cloudflare time-out.

The Returning Officer is aware of the situation, and we will continue to monitor and explore a solution before the close of vote tomorrow.

We can confirm that this error has only impacted a very small number of members who have a large number of domains associated with their membership. That said, this should not happen, and we are working on a fix but the issue is not widespread. It is our intention to ensure that all members have access to the vote.

If any member has not received their email that includes their voting credentials, I encourage them to contact us immediately at 1 (877) 860-1411.

I've actually run before :) but this time, it's for real.

Now you're an action star (is there no end to your talents?) and that line is right up there with "I'm gonna take you to the bank Senator, the Blood Bank!".

Congratulations @Graeme

@FM - I don't think anyone can beat Rob Villeneuve, he is too well known.

You did well @FM and Maple well known or not. What does it take to get 150 votes? Not much. The problem is there is not that much interest out there.

Wow... I expected @FM to be elected this time. But a great performance and congratulations for showing up. I am sure it's not the end.

Thanks for your support all of you. If you aren't yet, please ensure you're a CIRA member for next year's election. :) Just saying...

I'm here for you next year frank, I just found my old cira login link.

Millions of .CA domains registered, and only about 500 registrants voted? That is so sad. Ugh.

My name is David Mackey, and I am a member candidate for the CIRA Board this year. I am writing to you, because you are a CIRA member who is eligible to vote in the election. So I am asking you first for your support and then your vote. Information on the CIRA Board of Directors election can be found at Election : 2023 Board Election – CIRA

As a fellow CIRA member, you and I care about the good governance of the “.ca” domain system, the importance of a free and open internet for all Canadians, and the ongoing advances that digital communications bring to our daily lives.

As an elected board member, I draw on three decades of experience in IT as well as board governance expertise. I have unique Internet Governance experience with my volunteer work in the ICANN At-Large stakeholder group. I am committed to the values of transparency and accountability. I am committed to better member engagement, especially for members who cannot easily participate at in-person only CIRA events in limited high population Canadian cities.

But it’s not just about me. The Internet was built on the culture of a bottom-up, open and direct participation of connected individuals. I believe it’s important for all CIRA members to directly participate in a way that doesn’t restrict voices through gatekeepers. Therefore, I’ve created a Facebook Group called CIRA Members. You can find it here … Bei Facebook anmelden . I invite you to join the group where you are free to interact with other CIRA members directly.

Good governance demands knowing members’ concerns, while acting in the best overall interests of the corporation. Please let me know your ideas and concerns directly so that I can advance them to the board. I can be reached by email (mackey361@gmail.com), Twitter (@dbmackey) or by phone at (613) 592-0525 – I’d love to hear from you as I believe that direct member engagement and unstructured group conversations are the best way for the CIRA board to hear the views of the members they serve.

If you care about open and transparent Internet Governance in Canada as I do, then I ask you to give me your vote between Sept 27th and Oct 4th.

Thank you for your time, and I apologize for the intrusion into your inbox. I am contacting you in compliance with the Canadian Not-For-Profit Act Section 23.7, but I will not contact you again if you prefer.

Sincerely,
David Mackey

The online process of voting in the CIRA election begins on Sept 27th and runs until Oct 4th. As a CIRA member you should receive an email on Sept 27th entitled “Vote for your candidates!“ with instructions on how to vote. If you do not receive your instructions on how to vote please contact CIRA directly either by email at elections@cira.ca or by telephone at 1-877-860-1411 (8am to 8pm ET, Monday to Friday).

That was a nice letter I got from one of the candidates.
