X, the social media site formerly known as Twitter, appears to have begun ramping up efforts to sell disused user handles, kicking off a program previously signaled by billionaire owner Elon Musk.

Emails obtained by Forbes reveal that a team within the company, known as the @Handle Team, has begun work on a handle marketplace for the purchase of account names left unused by the people who originally registered them. In at least some cases, X/Twitter has emailed solicitations to potential buyers requesting a flat fee of $50,000 to initiate a purchase.

Currently, the Twitter handle @handle is not owned by Twitter. It might be taken by them just like how they took other usernames.

This is currently happening with Telegram. Usernames like @news, @auto and @bank all sold for over $2 million USD through their in-house auction platform. I'm not opposed to it. There is a huge (grey) market for the sale of exclusive usernames and these companies want a piece of the pie.

As long as they don't steal your username and then sell it themselves...

He should sell the right of the dot for a fee.... like 1k

Then if my handle MapleDots is taken I could buy MapleDots.ca or MapleDots.com

as in Twitter/MapleDots.ca

It would be an instant revenue stream

And what happens when you buy a valuable @handle from a social media outlet which is later goes out of business, hits bankruptcy, distress, etc. and its assets are resold and relaunched? Even a basic sale can have the buyer's lawyers working overtime to regain the ability to steal back valuable handles as a condition of the deal.

"You bought it from that other guy, not us"

Bye bye money.

I sympathize for those who registered rare usernames in the early days of the platform, but anyone who regularly buys and sells social media handles knows that majority were obtained through illicit means (sim swapping, phishing, extorting).
