Hi DN.ca,

Over the past few weeks, I've found myself frequently searching for .ca domains. I usually start my search on the registry, but the number of clicks required to get results felt too much.

So I put together something that I've been using myself:

Domain Information for your-domain.ca | Bucket.ca - Fast and Private .ca search

It's the fastest way to search for a .ca domain. The best parts:
  • It's private: No one can see what you've searched for. No production requests are logged—not even for debugging.
  • Simple Responses: The result focus only on the most important information.
  • Insane response time: Most requests are served in under 150ms.
Just add whatever you are searching for at the end of bucket.ca/ and that's it.

Would love to hear if you find it useful. Have a nice week!

(Sorry, the root domain is still a DAN lander. :)

Yeah, if you're a programmer, you've probably rolled your own command line scripts to do these things like I did many years ago.

Whois is not designed for mass lookups, and I think there's obvious good reasons for that. So you will have to deal with timeouts and even potentially getting your IP blocked.

If you're looking for speed to do mass lookups to check availability (and not actually interested in the registrant data itself), then there are better ways than just using whois alone to accomplish that - methods that CAN handle mass lookups and is a distributed system meant to handle that kind of load.
