I recently snagged a domain.ca that I have been watching for 3 years. I have never made an offer on it and the owner finally let it drop. I contacted the owner right after it expired and offered him a quick $50 e-transfer.

I have done this on a number of occasions and have successfully circumvented the TBR process.
The domains might not even have gone to auction but with the insanity at TBR lately I figured I would try this route on the domains I have been watching.

Whenever I like a domain I look at the expiration and enter it on my spreadsheet. Then I check to see if it got renewed, if it did not then I throw caution into the wind and make the offer.

The last one I snagged was one I had a specific use for so I am quite happy I landed it.

Has anyone else done this?

I don’t like reminding people that their domains are expiring. I would rather wait for TBR.

I could not take the chance on the one I just snagged, it was either deal with one person or take a chance with dozens of domainers bidding on it.

Was a gamble that paid off for me

Indeed. It was worth the trouble for you, since you had been monitoring it for 3+ years. The worst that could have happened is, may be you would waited out two or more years.

Kudos to you for your persistence.
