One is free and one is paid

The pricing appears to have changed:

https://www.dnforum.com/account/upgrades

I can't upload a screenshot (DN.ca formatting options seem to not be working for me), but they're now:

Elite Member
$750.00 per year

Corporate Membership
$4,500.00 per year
This guy is delusional.

This is a forum with a couple hundred active members, if that.

Even at its peak, how many people would have paid $22 - $62/month for a signature on a domain forum?

There is strong pushback from the dedicated members, then the price goes up even more. 🤦‍♂️

Perhaps they'll upgrade people for free, like Elon Musk did on Twitter, to make it seem like some people paid. I'd be surprised if anyone actually pays those sums, especially those who already paid for a lifetime membership.

It's interesting that DNF has 1/2 the registered members of NamePros, but so much less activity.

NamePros -
Members online 179
Guests online 1,026
Total visitors 1,205

DNForum -
Members online 16
Guests online 101
Total visitors 117

NamePros best account is also only $99/year vs $750 for a signature and "elite" badge on an inactive forum.

People are contributing their time and energy to post on a forum. Having a signature is a core part IMO.
You should not have to pay for it.

(On a side note, I have never paid a cent to be a member of any public forum or for extra benefits.)

news - An important note on lifetime accounts

$750 is cheaper than ANY Linkedin's paid membership. 15x cheaper than Twitter's Gold ticker. Most of us pay more to our mobile companies.

$750 is an absolutely optional upgrade, available only for those who wish to stand out, and show their status.

I am puzzled how he thinks some inactive domain forum is worth a comparison to Twitter or LinkedIn, or to the value of your mobile phone. Even for a far more active domain forum like NamePros, that is a stupid comparison.

Does he not realize that despite 500K registered members, very few are actually active? The forum normally has 10-15 members online.

I feel like Helmuts probably got ripped off, thinking he acquired something far more valuable. Probably should have done proper due diligence.

his thread has piqued my interest, particularly with regards to the issue of honoring previous memberships. I strongly believe that the initial buyer ought to have respected the grandfathered memberships of previous users, and all subsequent buyers should have followed suit.
This was written into the contract when I sold it to protect existing members.

It is my belief that individuals such as Theo hold immense value for DNF, having played a pivotal role in the forum's success for many years.

Transforming the forum into an exclusive business platform may not prove successful, particularly if it involves disregarding the contributions of longstanding members who have helped build a sense of community.

While new members can be charged whatever rate is deemed appropriate, it is only fair to allow the original members to retain their grandfathered privileges.

He has already made the decision to go ahead with the new rules, why even ask the members for input?

So they can blow off steam and become less angry - it's the new PR scam - ask users to a meeting to supposedly "talk over the issue" then do it anyway.

Look at those "Pipeline Hearings" and other "Town Hall Meetings" the Libs love to have to supposedly "discuss whether XYZ Project should proceed" - the bureaucrats behind these even admitted they had halted absolutely none of these due to opposition from Canadians and Indigenous people's complaints, and "their job is to push these projects ahead, not stop them".

It's called "properly managing the unwashed masses".

I agree, and the only way to appease both sides would be to create a paid higher echelon with even greater benefits than the old member privileges. I've seen that before, and I believe Reddit did this early on.
