When Matt Meeker (
@barkmeeker
) co-founded
Meetup | Find Local Groups, Events, and Activities Near You in 2002, the idea of meeting people “online” wasn’t really socially acceptable.
At the time, it was kind of nerve wracking to connect with others through the internet.
But,
@Meetup
didn’t start as
Meetup | Find Local Groups, Events, and Activities Near You – the company was originally called Cloud since his co-founder, Scott Heiferman (
@heif
), owned
Mission Critical Enterprise Software by Cloud Software Group.
So, how exactly did the company go from
Mission Critical Enterprise Software by Cloud Software Group to
Meetup | Find Local Groups, Events, and Activities Near You
Well, acquiring the domain name for Meetup involved some ingenuity….and Matt wound up paying less that his initial offer. A mere $1500.
Rob Schutz (
@rob
), founder of Snagged, sat down with Matt to chat about how Meetup came to life. They even debated about whether or not they are actually friends.
Rob was employee number seven at
@BarkBox
back in 2012, the company Matt co-founded after Meetup. And Matt and his co-founders Henrik Werdelin (
@werdelin
) and Carly Strife (
@BrooklynCarly
) were one of the first investor checks into
@Ro
.
It's safe to say that both Matt and Rob have some pretty good **chemistry and have built a couple of multi-billion dollar companies alongside each other.
