Question for the forum, any thoughts on what would make the best domain or even type of domain for my field-of-dreams project? (if I build it, will they come???). Something for end users to instinctively get, no acronyms or industry specific terms.

So if you could have any domain name you want for the perfect .ca specific marketplace, what would it be?

Should it be a domain/name centric domain name, or a brand centric domain? They all know its a domain they need, but I kinda like the idea of forcing them to think about the connection between their domain and brand.

Spit-balling thoughts:

a) something obvious like ForSale.ca or Aftermarket.ca. Marketplace.ca, etc...

b) something like domain.ca, domains.ca, name.ca, names.ca, etc...

c) some two word variant like DomainNames, DomainStore, NameStore, BrandStore, etc... many many options in this vein.

d) an action word like Prosper, Catapult or Propel as in "Propel your business to the next level with the perfect domain" etc...

e) matchmakers or cupid, as in a matchmaking service for your business and the perfect domain

f) something completely irrelevant but unforgettable and kinda funny like "bacon"? Everyone loves bacon right?

g) something like "jealous" or "envy" - as in "Your business doesn't need to be jealous of our domains, give it the perfect domain and brand name that it deserves!" or "Don't just envy our great domains, give your business the boost it needs with the perfect brand name"

h) vital.ca - the perfect domain is vital to your business' growth

i) something cutesy and brandable, like Brandy.ca - it ties in the brand names aspect, could have a mascot named "Brandy" that will help you find the perfect brand & domain.

Most of the traffic will come from the domain names themselves, so instant SEO isn't a necessity in my book.

The domain needs to fit with the site, and the site & landing pages need to be designed for the end-user with professional level graphic design. It needs to be friendly, inviting, attractive, informative, professional and most importantly, credible, trustworthy and authoritative.

So I'd probably shy away from most multi-word variants, just not authoritative enough for my likes (there might be an exception or two to that though).

Would be happy to hear everyone's feedback. But try not to think exclusively like a domainer, more like a business person. Not dumbed down and targeted at people looking for a domain to sell their crafts, but up and coming successful people who want to accelerate their growth and willing to pay minimum $10K+ for top domains.

In fact, I may have multiple front facing brands skinned differently to target the $10K+ domains, and another for the cheaper domains under $10K.

Thanks in advance!

Overall, I would prefer a single word brand type personally. They are more versatile IMO.

Many of your examples would be good choices, so I will just go down the list with my thoughts on each.

a) something obvious like ForSale.ca or Aftermarket.ca. Marketplace.ca, etc...
These are all great terms, but I like them more as investment grade domains than to use for a domain website.

b) something like domain.ca, domains.ca, name.ca, names.ca, etc...
For a true top tier term like these, it is a strong option.

c) some two word variant like DomainNames, DomainStore, NameStore, BrandStore, etc... many many options in this vein.
I am not that big of a fan of "domain" and "names" domains. They are fine, just so many similar ones out there.

d) an action word like Prosper, Catapult or Propel as in "Propel your business to the next level with the perfect domain" etc...
My favorite option so far. Branding terms like these work well.

e) matchmakers or cupid, as in a matchmaking service for your business and the perfect domain
I don't think these types are the best fit. I would focus on something more business centric.

f) something completely irrelevant but unforgettable and kinda funny like "bacon"? Everyone loves bacon right?
Another good option, depending on the word.

g) something like "jealous" or "envy" - as in "Your business doesn't need to be jealous of our domains, give it the perfect domain and brand name that it deserves!" or "Don't just envy our great domains, give your business the boost it needs with the perfect brand name"
I would focus on a term that has more of a positive meaning.

h) vital.ca - the perfect domain is vital to your business' growth
This is an excellent option.

i) something cutesy and brandable, like Brandy.ca - it ties in the brand names aspect, could have a mascot named "Brandy" that will help you find the perfect brand & domain.
It's a decent option, depending on what it is. Though, I think people are more likely to remember terms like Vital, Propel, Prosper, etc.

Here is my opinion...

1. Sedo and DAN have no meaning yet incredibly successful.

2. GoDaddy and Porkbun are quirky and memorable and also incredibly successful.

3. Afternic and UNI Registry are industry specific and both dominated.

So I don't think the name is the most important thing, I think the platform is and if you build it they will come.

I'm a little biased and I always like a Canadian flavour and I chuckled at your Bacon or even my MapleBacon idea but in the end the platform will be the deal maker/breaker.

The issue I have with a marketplace of any sorts is that everyone need a store. If you were to use Bacon.ca then users would want user.bacon.ca or bacon.ca/user for their storefront unless everyone just mixes the names together.

I think whatever you do might be labour intensive and it will quickly suck more time than you can imagine, I know dn.ca has thousands of hours in it and if anything I would offer to work within this platform, expand on what we already have. I have no problems turning dn.ca over to the community, that was always my plan, make it self sufficient and community run.

We can do landers (an idea namepoos took from us) uploading of names etc. If you check out the Xenforo platform you can do most anything or even incorporate a new platform. So I would suggest a partnership of some sort to unify the Canadian space instead of splitting it apart like what is happening on the .com platforms. You can see GoDaddy wanting to unify things and for us it might be nice to build something as a community.

I prefer 1 word domain like these for a .ca domain market just like your example vital.ca:
Evergreen.com
Embrace.com

A short 1-word singular domain with a seriously positive connotation.

Along the lines of your "Prosper, Catapult or Propel" options - something like Success, Triumph, or Acquire, Attain, Achieve, Premier, Supreme, Elite, etc.

You also own a good one: Summit
