I'm not sure, maybe it is just me, but the "new posts" link on the top also seems to show topics that don't have new/unread posts for me, but maybe I'm understanding it wrong what the link is supposed to do?

There is a link (bottom right) after you click on "New Posts" to mark all topics as read, click on it and it will start you from scratch.
