Otherwise, I’m sure there would have been bigger numbers back then. Escorts and malls went for 5 figures. I believe malls has since dropped and picked up again.

Most auction platforms were like this, you could always "buy in" with the minimum bid before the auction started, but for some you could also increase your bid ahead of time.
I remember March 20th, 2003 when there were at least 30 domains which had higher bids than the highest bid recorded here. There were also bids higher than this, when TBR happened daily. So TBR has come a full circle, if I may add. Nice to see that.
