TBR Drop - May 31, 2023 (1.Viewing)

yeah, definitely something weird again as nothing got bid up based on the auction results report I received.

So it looks like the connections to our bidding server were blocked accidentally. The issue has been fixed and we double-checked that the auction server's availability is being monitored going forward. We'll have to re-run all of the auctions of this week, details are to follow.

Does anyone know what CHEN went for?

I got busy yesterday and forgot to check and possibly bid. @bmetal

Thanks for that - I just went to check right at 1PM and it was over.

$500. Incredibly popular last name, even as a first name. But that is the curse of popular names, you'll want more based on its popularity, but it'll likely never sell at that price, justified or not. I'll probably take it to the grave.

Plus, people looking to buy names are cheap as dirt - and Chen is a lot more popular as a first name than you think, and I know around 5 guys with that name in my small circle of Chinese friends and in-laws.

But they will all want to buy it for $250-$500 and act hurt and angry when you refuse.

I won 3 of the WHC names. Paid for, in my account and parked.
Everyone think it's ok for WHC to remove them?

yeah, at more than a few of us here have been through it before, multiple times, with multiple registrars, and even due to CIRA themselves.

Basically its in the rules that CIRA or the registrar have the ability to correct mistakes. In this case, WHC had a broken auction system again. It happens. It just happened to me two weeks ago too. Re-ran auctions for domains I had already won and paid for.

In the end, yes, it sucks. But the reality is, if you're not the one that wins due to a mistake, this gives you another chance. So sometimes a mistake benefits you, sometimes a mistake seems to screw you.

CIRA's giganitc eff-up about a year ago had me lose 1,341 hand regged domains, mostly great LLL's and one-worders that would be a premium portfolio for anyone just on their own - taken away some two weeks later. Probably the biggest single mistake CIRA's ever made. Another member here also lost some fantastic domains in that screw up too.

So after you've been screwed that hard, then these little screw ups seem pretty inconsequential... They happen. Ideally they wouldn't, but they still do.

I can feel your frustration and I would have felt the same way. But I think it’s only fair to have a level field and on Thursday it was not so for all of us. WHC investigated and they found that to be true. Not just one person but several of us here had the same issue. So it is not just our own mistake of forgetting about the auction or having issues at our end - like a power failure, bad connection etc. all of these have caused us to lose domains in auctions and it’s nothing that the Registrar can do.

As @rlm stated, the domains were registered and parked when it was called back and the money refunded. It has happened multiple times not because of participants mistake but the Registra’s or Registry’s mistake. I feel it’s only fair.

Yup, that brought me no joy

Like massive price mistakes at online stores (which are only honored if you live in Quebec), I don't even try for that stuff anymore. Just a big waste of time and effort.

So how well did you do on that recent CVCV.ca sale which is also a name (albeit a very rare one)?

Today, names were removed from my account and was issued a refund. Good luck to bidders.

Mike, our apologies for the inconvenience this may have caused to you and others.

To add some more detail - no one was able to place bids on auctions after 1 pm EDT last week, thus the decision to re-run 8 auctions was made. Please also feel out to reach out directly to me with any concerns or comments.

Please remove my initial proxy bids. I can't seem to remove them. Thanks
