TBR Musings - December 2, 2020 (3.Viewing)

Sibername has the potential to disrupt here, I am willing to work with them to see where it goes as long as the entire process is more automated than myid and domainer friendly.

I will be discussing this with them during our first virtual meeting and hope some of you will be able to join me to ask the hard questions.

And the reality is that I do follow my moral compass and DO NOT take part in MyID auctions.

What's everyone else's excuse?

Don't transfer your feelings about a company to me or others. Your "moral compass" is your own and guided by your own feelings, opinions, theories and whatever.

Whoa, you're the one who posted this gem:

"The reality is, we don't have to participate with companies that we suspect may be up to no good."

So, by that the only assumption possible is that you feel MyID is totally above board, their auctions are above reproach, and Danny runs with the angels?

Thank you again for putting words and feeling onto someone else. I don't have time to waste on this kind of stuff. Knock yourself out.

I have a couple dozen domains or so at MyID that I've either won in their auctions, or they just got for me with no competing bids. But it's hard to beat the $20 starting bid at Siber as most of the name I go after are probably just me, or maybe one or two other bidders. I know the top cream is going to go for top dollar nowadays. If I REALLY want a name, I'll put a TBR bid in at a few places including Siber and Myid. Those two usually get most or all of the top names in recent times.

Agree about the $20 at sibername. It allows you to pick up a few gem "lottery tickets' that can pay off great in the future and if not, you are not out much.

I do wish that Siber and MyID closed their auctions at the same time. That way, if you are chasing more than one name you could see how they are playing out as they get close to the end and maybe just focus on one important one...especially if you have a budget you want to stick to. I guess ton the other side, is if you miss out at MyId, you still have Siber...

You should put that in this topic with all the details you would like because I will be talking to Sibername next week.

The reality is, we don't have to participate with companies that we suspect may be up to no good. Also, in terms of bidding, we can stop anytime. Few, if any of these names are going to be life-changing...the bus comes by every week.

Lately the bus only makes 1 stop. MyID. It drives by Sibername, but you have to jump on/off while its moving...

In another bad analogy, we are required to buy our TBR goods, at just two stores. Sibername is the local 7-Eleven right now. MyID is the Costco. I don't really think that qualifies as having options...

if anyone has any MyID auction results, please PM them to me.

Siber has been at the top (or near) before, I'm sure they will again. You are right though, MyId is cleaning up now.

I don't know about that, as post-WHC the Siber division has been far more hit than miss, and even discounting the potential WHC meddling with the "secret TBR sauce", they have also physically moved them from Ottawa (right next to CIRA's servers) to Montreal, which adds logistical problems to the mix.

I think MyID has always had the most TBR links and the fastest servers/software, but this was mitigated somewhat by the close geographical proximity of Siber (remember the TBR is a game of nanoseconds), but now that it's a Montreal vs Toronto battle, MyID will be firmly in charge for the foreseeable future.

I agree with both you and [notify]DomainRecap[/notify] why when I see a name Im really interested in I put a bid on at both registrars

Holy crap, that end price on Physician was insane! Probably went higher than O2.

Is it 100% moral compass? Or is it that you wouldn't be winning any of the auctions anyways, so it has zero consequence to give it up? Or is it a combination of both? I'd prefer to not use them, but I'd also want certain domains. So for me it can depend week to week based on the domains in TBR.

I think we are all looking for an excuse to not use MyID and the best bet is to get Sibername to invest in their infrastructure so they can become number one in TBR.

For sure something we will be discussing during the virtual meeting next week.

If Siber's TBR software was moved to hardware in Montreal, that could easily be a fatal move, this is a game of milliseconds. Actually, even less than that. To be honest, I'd be absolutely stunned if they were stupid enough to actually do that. That would tell me they have no clue how this works, and I'm sure the Siber people would have advised against it, which means they ignored advice from the very people who made them successful in the first place. Those would all be bad signs - and would tell me Management doesn't listen to IT and that's a sign that management is out of touch with reality.

So I sincerely hope that's not the case here. Then again, I can't explain any other reason why the TBR performance dropped off shortly after WHC acquisition.

it's 100% moral compass, as MyID wins a LOT more than just the top 1-2 domains every week, and those don't usually go for high 4-figures. Remember, we're not just talking about O2 and Leasing, but also stuff like TownSquare and Olympiques.

I ran into the same dilemma in collectibles, where shady dealers would have killer stock, but I refused to give them my money (thereby strengthening their business) because I disagreed with their tactics.

It cost me a lot, but not my soul.

I realize I am cutting myself off from a selection of TBR domains, but in the past I made do with Siber and the rest and always got enough supply for my budget. But with WHC taking over Siber that scenario has changed a lot and every week seems to be boner after boner, and I'm losing out bigtime due to their incompetence.

If the new WHC-Siber hybrid continues to sink into mediocrity, and eventually insignificance, I may have to reevaluate my position and potentially join the MyID coven, but I'm holding out as long as I can.
