TBR Musings - June 8, 2022 (1.Viewing)

The last two weeks have been like what we had before, with MyID dominating the TBR run. I think WHC took over for a while but now they have too much going on there, that TBR may be not be that important imo.

There used to be some bottom feeder Registrars in the TBR run last year, which is not happening these days. I see WHC dominating the middle half today between the 44th to 75th pick, with MyID picking up most in top 30.

Who knows.. every dog needs a little nudge or a gentle kick from time to time!!

I will agree with that, either they are doing something different or they are still trying to fully switch over.

I was going to say the same last week but decided to cut them some slack because of all the changeover stuff.

Right now WHC looks to be losing their edge.

I think the bothersome part is the domains that land at MYID seem to fetch for more money than at WHC. Now, is that because of the quality? Maybe. It’s really difficult to judge the differences but I know it seems that the prices I have paid at Sibername/WHC have been less than MYID.

What choice do we really have?

That's just a byproduct of their pricing strategy, as by the time the $20 WHC bids roll around, MyID and their $60 mins are mostly done for the day.

The key competitive metric is that initial quick-burst in the first round, which is usually in the 25-30 pick range (it was 28 this week) and it's the range where MyID took WHC out behind the TBR shed for a sound beating.

That's my problem as well, and the price differential on similar domains is getting too large to ignore. It's not even in the same ballpark anymore...

There’s a lot of things that don’t make sense and I’m tired of being quiet about it. There is so much bidding happening prior to the auction close. Even the day before bidding is happening and prices rising before the end times of auctions. I don’t see that happening at WHC very often.

I just want to know why we have to be under one registrars control like this?

There’s so much to speculate here. I agree that I too have noticed that pattern.

Nothing but minor tweaks have changed on our catching itself, but obviously this is something we're looking at closely again at the moment.

It’s been like that for a while unfortunately.

I don’t think it’s because of quality. It just seems that whatever MyId catches, it will for sure go higher than if Sibername/WHC grabbed it. Maybe there are more bidders at MyId? Who really knows. There was talk of the “MyId triangle” where names get caught by MyId and just stays there and never comes out. Also no nameservers are added. Maybe they have a lot of non paying bidders?

If many here will recall, Pool use to have bidder ID’s in the auctions so you know who you’re up against. I believe Snapnames does the same as well. I wouldn’t mind bidder ID’s at either MyId or WHC.

Unfortunately I don’t think bidder ID’s solves the problem. When you give a registrar full control and when CIRA has no interest in overseeing them. You can add all these extra measures but it doesn’t mean the outcome will change.

I’m still choosing to participate. I am still the one deciding whether I want to spend that money and whether it’s worth it to me. But just curious how much these shenanigans have cost me over the years.

Let's not go there again, as we all know there will never be changes at MyID and any push in this direction can only result in undue privacy concerns at a place we all trust anyway, WHC.

And if Registrars wanted to fix the game, using Bidder IDs would do absolutely nothing. Just "create hundreds of fake bidder IDs" and it's business as usual.

If you really want to solve the problem, then petition the CIRA to formally audit TBR providers on a yearly basis, using an independent 3rd-party who would report their findings to the government. That would close down any funny business pretty quick.

Exactly, and simplistic "controls" like Bidder IDs provide absolutely zero openness on the side of a registrar with full access and control of their bidding system (duh). It's just another way for end users to track other end users and nothing more.

I’m gonna throw this out there….

Anyone win any domains or participated in the auctions at MYID today?

I think it's a great idea. Shouldn't we??

Anyone win an auction at WHC today? How long does it usually take to get control of the domain?

I agree. I wish. No way that will ever happen though.
