Can someone explain to me what's going on here, and what the purpose/objective would be?

Simply visit the domain to see what's going on.

It also says "Just a Test' in the browser tab when viewed on desktop.

I'm rather certain this is a bad idea, even if it is a test, so I won't include any screenshots.

I just visited on my iPhone and it looks like a regular site to me.

You guys don't see a problem with this?

I see the same thing, and it certainly does looks like a regular site... except that it's BBC's website.

If you visit the actual BBC site you'll see it's the exact same, and the domain gets updated in real time with the BBC site. The only difference between the two "was" that the real BBC website had ads, whereas the vil domain didn't. I'm 100% certain there were previously zero ads on the .ca, when viewed on desktop anyway. But today, a couple days later, there are ads regardless of what device you use.

Is this mirroring, or are they just forwarding their domain to BBC, and masking the domain (or something like it)? Back to my original question: what's going on here and what would be the purpose/objective?

Great catch. Good eye indeed. May be someone found a better way to monetize? Anyone willing to share details?

I see what you are saying now. There is indeed something fishy going on with it.

Maybe someone found a way to mirror a site but somehow put their own ads on there?

Code:
<html>
<head>
<title>Just a test</title>
<link rel="icon" href="https://bbc.com/favicon.ico" type="image/x-icon"/>
</head>
<frameset rows="*" cols="*">
<frame name="main" src="https://bbc.com">
</html>

<noframes>
This page uses frames, but your browser doesn't support them.
</noframes>

Someone is just loading the BBC site in a frame.

Yes there could be legal problems with that

PS. They are even hotlinking the BBC favicon *HELP*

Thanks for looking into it.

Why would someone do this? Perhaps they are just messing around, with 0 bad intentions, and didn't think anyone would ever notice? Or are they somehow able to profit from the ads?

That’s what I believe. I mean why else have a mirror site up? Maybe I’m missing something.

No they cannot get ad income, nothing is in the source code.

Plus BBC has blocked access to their site when you click any link.

So it is basically someone trying to make it look like a live site, it does not update, it simply displays the BBC site in a frame.

Thanks, but what do you mean by it doesn't update? The content on the domain does get updated, in terms of reflecting exactly what's added to the real BBC website.

It works exactly like a masked redirect, nothing more.

It loads the bbc site within a frame, the address bar will not change and the articles cannot be clicked.

It simply displays the bbc website, nothing in their code updates it is all on the bbc end.

I can click articles, and click my way thru the entire BBC website while the vil domain is showing. I don't understand the depths of mirroring and frames so forgive me if I'm missing something, but I thought I would mention it.

Nonetheless, tomorrow I will post how I used this masking technique to sell a few domains.
It will be a lengthy post so stay tuned.
Thanks in advance.
