Now this is not possible. I was told by a CIRA official the only way they release the restricted domains was through a TBR list. If there was a breach then this is equal or worse than Roe v.Wade leak to me.

We must ask someone form CIRA to clear the air.

CDC.ca

and so on, and on, and on....

marigold.ca
cass.ca

The list is never ending!

Hi all,

There has been a technical issue with the registry where the blocking of domains being registered at the 2nd level (because domains exist at the third level) failed. This simply means we have inadvertently allowed registrations that should have been blocked.

We are investigating further and will get back to individual registrants as soon as we have full understanding of the issue at hand.

Thank you Richard.. Much appreciate your attention to this

CIRA is on the ball. Why are we punishing those who registered the domains though? I’ve seen worse things happen that go unnoticed and on another note why are these domains “Restricted”?

Great to see that CIRA has taken it upon them. I am in no way trying to punish anyone here. I register domains every week. But some of the domains that were in the list are domains that were not offered to the public and when contacted, I was told that it would have to be though a special drop or TBR.

I had a number of those domains that CIRA took back a while back.

My biggest nicest one was joy.ca and it was no joy when I lost it.

Some saving grace, I do have a mediocre joyy.ca

[notify]Eby[/notify] sorry I wasn’t referring to you at all. Obviously I noticed this as well with another domain. I just think it’s pretty pathetic that something like this can happen at CIRA. What else is going on behind the scenes?

No no.. I am cool [notify]theinvestor[/notify]. I am not offended at all. It's just that I feel the same way as [notify]MapleDots[/notify] feel about JOY.ca taken back, when he had registered it without any wrong intentions. It's just that I would want CIRA to do the right thing in this case also, as they have in the past. I wish to think that they are doing a good job and I have great trust in Richard. Most of us here have invested our life savings and our lifetime on something that CIRA oversees. It's that paramount for us to have trust in them.

@theinvestor you asked why these domains should have been blocked? When a multiple domain registrations exists at a 3rd level in ca, for example richard.on.ca and richard.qc.ca, then richard.ca cannot be registered unless the owners of the names at the 3rd level agree to who should have the rights at the second.

If there is only 1 such registration at the third (or fourth) level then that singular registrant has prior rights to register the name at the second level. This has been CIRA policy since day one when 3rd level (provincial abbreviations mostly) extensions were allowed (such new 3rd level registrations are no longer allowed but existing 3rd level registrations are allowed to renew)

Technology is prone to failure unfortunately and in this case the technology that blocks the registration of 3rd level domains at the 2nd level failed despite the very rigorous testing we do on every registry update and release.

We are continuing to investigate the cause and unfortunately will be contacting each registrant (and their registrar) where we will have to cancel the invalid registration.

OK [notify]richard.schreier[/notify] let us know when CIRA figures it out.

Thank you for the update [notify]richard.schreier[/notify]

I am assuming the domain registration would be cancelled and all those domains would be shelved as they are restricted.

Another proof of how much I trust CIRA and their staff, especially Richard. ;)

I wish i had at least grabbed meta.ca, abc.ca and thc.ca while they were free lol.

Figured this was what might be happening anyway. Reminds me of when I bought these LLs and had them clawed back:

A few of those above that I "bought" were also "bought" again this time around (i.e., those that aren't provincial extensions).

Seems like the restricted geo/municipal domains haven't been affected. Only those that were restricted because of third level provincial extensions became available again.
