Thank you for the detailed feedback, I will take this to the team.

1. Bills for domains set to auto-renew are generated 45 days before the expiry date
2. charged 5 days before the expiry date
3. For most .CAs the auto-renewal is executed 2 days before the expiry date
4. All other TLDs are renewed when the invoice is charged, 5 days before the expiry date.
Thanks for the clarification. Out of curiosity, why just "most .CAs" ? What are the exceptions? And why wouldn't renewals always just occur immediately after being charged rather than a few days later? What makes CA need to be different than all the other TLDs?

Hopefully FM is talking only about auto renewals, I would hope that as soon as domains are renewed they are immediately renewed at CIRA.

I can tell you I have a domain that had a legal issue and the person that sold it to me needed to get it out of his name pronto. There was nothing illegal there but he was adamant the domain be out of his name and that is why I was able to purchase it. Had there been any delays it would have jeopardized my purchase.

It had something to do with how many domains he owned and he needed to reduce that amount, don't ask me why, I did not ask questions I just acquired the domain.

So it was important that a renewal or transfer actually executed when I paid for the transaction. The whole Epik thing with people paying for renewals that don't actually happen should not be repeated and I think @richard.schreier should make sure cira has a policy in place that assures paid renewals or whois changes are executed immediately.

Sorry @FM , these comments are not directed at you or whc, just in general because they came up in the conversation.

The main reason for the deferred renewals is that clients have a couple of days to get a refund for an accidental auto-renewal. Sibername had this functionality, and we implemented it at WHC as well. Some .CAs with legacy Sibername services attached to them are currently still excluded from the deferral. Why start with .CA? It's our biggest TLD. You will see this expanded to other TLDs going forward, too.

It's important to know that a courtesy refund for an accidental auto-renewal is entirely at our digression; our terms and conditions still apply.

Yes, the deferral only applies to auto-renewals. We had a bug where this applied to "active" renewals too, but this is no longer the case.

Good, as I've had problems with that before. Sold a domain with less-than 30 days before expiry, refused by Sedo after I renewed, and I needed to contact WHC support to finally push the renewal through.

Transferring domains from MyID to WHC. Domains don't resolve until the transfer is approved at WHC. Invoice is already marked as paid.
Domain status at MyID:
pendingDelete
serverHold
serverRenewProhibited
serverUpdateProhibited

Both domains show status as Sus under My Domains - Status:

Sent the e-mail to support since chat doesn't transfer to an agent in billing.

Lesson: don't do transfers on weekends.

Edit: transferred successfully to WHC.

Note that MyID's domain status info when managing a particular domains is often out of date, definitely not instantly updated, completely ignore that. You definitely have to check whois to know anything for sure.

I moved some domains from MyID to WHC for a friend's account this weekend too, and it was a bit confusing because WHC took me to the payment page, I entered the cvv for the card on file, and then nothing, it just redirected to the client page with no indication that anything happened. Definitely weird. Later got an email with instructions and a link to enter auth codes. Everything went smooth from there, but, there should really be some message explaining something after you pay. Transfers appeared to be instantaneous, as they should be, even late on a saturday night.

I transferred from MyID before and this was the first time domain showed up as suspended / server hold and stopped resolving. As soon as I initiated the transfer at WHC, I got the e-mail from CIRA that the domain was renewed and MyID account showed the 2024 expiry date and then in 10 minutes, it just went back to old expiry date with suspended status.

This was the e-mail I got from CIRA
You’ve successfully redeemed your .CA domain domain.ca from the Redemption Grace Period by renewing it with your registrar. It’s nice to have you back!

Just to let you know, domain names redeemed from the Redemption Grace Period may take a few hours before they begin to resolve. Be patient, it’s coming!

That was too close! To avoid this from reoccurring, be sure to make note of your expiry date: 2024/05/02.

Questions? Concerns? Contact your registrar:

Yeah WHC interface needs to improve the transfer process and make it smooth without any manual process.

@FM after a .ca domain is registered or won at TBR at WHC, how long before it can be transferred to a new owner?

If there is a 30 or 60 day time limit, is there way around it such as pushing it to another account at WHC?

For transfers out of WHC, the standard CIRA 60-day lock applies. While we don't have an automated account push yet, you can work with our support team to move the domain to another account at WHC before the lock expires.
