Are you going to be attending the Austin event? If so, that would be a good time to meet the NamesCon owner and team to discuss collaborating with them in some way. They have, in the past, collaborated with (for example) the domainer community in India.

Unrelated to Namescon, domainer Page Howe organized an online conference in the early days of the pandemic; you might want to chat with him about his experience with that. Kudos to him for testing the waters with that.

Personally, I am sick of online conferences; it's time to meet in person again, but I realize Canada is a big country and folks are spread out across a wide area, so in-person is hard for some. I get that.

Frank Michlick used to organize these wonderful Domainer Dinners in various Canadian cities. I remember those fondly.

Mini namescon like meetings within Canada sound good too. Even larger events are a possibility.

Point is we need something purely for Canada in the .ca space

We can have...

  • Live Events
  • Online Events
  • Small Group meetings
  • Large Group meetings
  • Informal restaurant or coffee shop meetings.

Basically using our Calendaring system on dn.ca we can schedule months ahead or a quick informal meet.

So imagine domainers in Vancouver setting a date in 3 months, Toronto 6 months, Montreal, etc.

Or you can say.... Hey I'm in Toronto, anyone want to meet.

On the other hand we can go to dn.ca/meet (once I bring it online) for a quick informal video chat or we can schedule a formal one.

I was going to use Google meet and have the dn.ca/meet always go to the proper room but there has to be someone there to invite members in so instead I will make a topic dn.ca/meet or similar where we can post the access codes to whatever event we have and that topic will always run next to the chatroom and calendar links. So anyone wanting to meet can post and we have instant live or video meets.

Keep in mind we can use our chatroom for informal scheduled meets too, I am looking at incorporating video into it as well.

So many possibilities as long as we do something more Canadian instead of having to go to Texas. I mean how many of us can really do that annually?

Not like NamesCon, but if you're in Montreal or would like to visit Montreal, please save the date:

We're still planning some of the details; stay tuned.

Are you doing a Star Wars theme? Prize for the best Darth Vader costume?

We haven't planned that yet, even though it occurred to us too :) The date was actually picked by picking a month, and a day of the week and then excluding the dates that didn't work for us - and we ended up on May 4th.

May 4th is an odd date for people who have to travel.

A monday we can extend the weekend or a friday we can increase a weekend but a thursday is odd near the middle of the week.

Had it been the next day Friday I would have paid a visit but I am currently fully booked on the Thursday.

Very exciting to see the Return of the Domainer Dinner: The Force Awakes! I have pencilled it into my calendar.

Thanks for the feedback. This time, there will be limited space, so consider it a little test. We'll see how it goes and what we can do going forward. We'd love to have you attend @MapleDots .

Now where's my old mailing list? Oh wait, everybody needs to re-opt-in, right? :D

I think the idea of a meetup, or a series of meetups, is great, but I think one should not in any way promote it as a mini NamesCon. That is a well developed event, and for a host of reasons please don't promote it as a little NamesCon for Canada.

I would prefer a totally fresh Canadian specific different kind of event.

If not already, you should get in touch with Arif who runs the Domain Social. He is from Canada and has a host of experience with online hosting. He was also the tech lead in Page's The Domain Show a few years ago.

Is there any chance CIRA would be interested in co-sponsoring and promoting a Canadian focus domain name event of this type?

All in the works - I am just a bit rusty, I remember how I ran the Domainer Dinners back in the day. Too bad DomainSponsor isn't around any more to pick up the majority of the tabs, but when @richard.schreier was at Pool.com, he sure helped us out with the drinks.

Namescon type meets for Canada?

As per out title, we have discussed that, which is why we are saying type of meet.

As time goes on I think we will find our own identity and I am thinking of going like this...

meet.dn.ca along with dn.ca/meet

Because dn.ca is a neutral entity the meet can easily be arranged through our community site and hopefully once we find some kind of branding idea we can come together and discuss it in the boardroom to put things into place.

It was always nice to attend DNSeattle, and Richard Lau put on Domainfest/NamesCon meet ups in Vancouver years ago.

We're moving the Domainer Dinner to June 9th, a Friday instead. I hope this allows some of the out-of-towners to join us as well. Details to follow.

I plan to attend June 9th but will need to know the time.

I will drive in (about 6 hours) and my family will stay in Montreal with friends.

I will attend the meet and my son Kameron wants to come too, he is an aspiring domainer and wants to learn.

So count me in, if the meet is later in the day I can drive in at early morning if the meet is in the morning I will drive in the night before.

It will be nice to be in Montreal again (y)

We're cancelling the dinner for this Friday as there just aren't enough registrations at this point. We'll regroup and plan anew.

Shortcut and official address to this page is

Early stages of planning...

Near May 24 weekend which means May 20th Monday or May 19th Sunday if we are flexible.

GTA - Toronto and Vicinity

Lunch meeting at a restaurant to be determined.

Will plan location for the centre of the group so that nobody has to travel too far.

Anyone wanting to attend or considering it please post here.

Also list a topic you would like to discuss, my topic is "How to engage the PUBLIC to participate in .ca" and how we could communicate better with CIRA to use key technology events to promote .ca.

ALSO LOOKING FOR A SPONSOR IF ANYONE IS INTERESTED
