Several of these sales are likely related to SEO reasons like traffic, backlinks, pagerank, etc.
So, the generic value of the domain itself is basically zero on several of these without that.

If .com didn't exist, then .NET would likely be in that position. .ORG would also probably be even more popular.
It's not like .COM is magic. It is the first popular extension, and is synonymous with the internet.

GoDaddy has acknowledged this system problem in the past, outside blaming employees.
They have stated that they were "actively working on multiple solutions" to fix it.
I am not sure on the current status, as I gave up bidding on GoDaddy auctions a while back primarily because of this issue...

Supply and demand.
There is way more supply than demand. There is no demand for domains like xjqwk.com or similar.
You have to evaluate them on a case by case basis.
