Sometimes past 3PM at Siber, but that's very rare. A few months ago there was a never-ending auction that kept getting mid-bid up at the last second until after 3PM EST.

Metrotown is over, and the pattern for these 4-figure auctions held true again.
Once the price gets within $100 (or one bid) of a big even number, one of the parties wakes up, realizing they're about to spend $X thousand, then drops out - that "big number" barrier was $5K for Candies and $4K for Metrotown.

Never imagined that Metrotown would fetch that much. Can't be for re-sale, must be an end user or someone with a plan to develop. I hope so. Wonder if the previous owner was watching the auction.. my heart would have sunk.
Congratulations to all the winners and I can only hope that there would not be any remorse by the end of the day.
I was at an auction a few years ago, and by that night, couldn't believe what I did and even after all these years, I keep renewing those same domains, just to justify my initial mistake. I hope I have others here, who would be brave enough to accept it.

So... I didn't want to influence the TBR since I wasn't sure what I was going to do, but now that the dust has settled, I'll throw out a story.
There was an interesting domain in this weeks TBR that I had acquired in a portfolio acquisition at a price around $35K (for the portfolio). That was around 15 years ago or so.
A few years later I sold the one domain I'm referring to for mid 5-figs. The buyer had gotten a trademark on the two words, but the trademark was dated many years after the original registration date which was 2000. That's how I ultimately made the sale rather than them filing a cdrp. One person here on the forum may remember this as I used his lawyer at the time to do the communications.
However, that well known Canadian company somehow later divested itself of that domain and I'm not sure how or why exactly. A second company then owned the domain, but not the trademark. Very weird. Then fast forward a few years and they let it drop.
Of course I was certainly considering re-purchasing it - however, I did sign an NDA and an agreement not to interfere in their business after the sale. So even though they let the domain go, the trademark still exists and now the registration date has been reset. So I just didn't think it was worth the fight or effort. They may no longer care about the domain at all, but if they're not interested, probably no one else will be either, its sort of a toxic domain now.
In any case, I just wanted to give the new owner some history, so if you bought the domain today and check some history on it, you'll know what domain I'm talking about. That pretty much explains as much as I can say, but if the new owner has any further questions, you know how to find me.

It's a fancy/expensive area/neighborhood in Vancouver, huge mall, towers going up for fun, etc. They're building a new "downtown" area the last few condo-mania years, and it looks set to continue for the next 10+ years.Eby said:

And for the record, I was the second to last bidder. The Sibername bidding/submit problem happened and it didn't accept my final bid and that ended the auction. Normally when that issue happens I can just hit the reload button and it resubmits the form and it goes eventually through after a time or two hitting reload. In the past it was never much of an issue since this technique always worked. But this time, after like 10 attempts, it never did go through. Then I realized the auction was certainly over by that point because I knew I was one of only two bidders remaining. And by the time I went back to the home page and re-navigated to the bidding page, it was indeed closed.
It was a nice domain to lose out on, but there are always more so I'm not going to make a big deal out of it. But certainly money was lost for WHC. I can't imagine I'm the only one this has happened to.
Speaking of problems, [notify]FM[/notify], I know we talked about it last month, but those domains that people have permanently stuck in TBR request lists are still stuck there (at least mine is - the domain is sophia.ca). And while I'm being the old scrooge here complaining about everything, I'll point out that Sibername has at least 30+ "ghosts of domains past" in my account too. They seem to recognize that the domains should _not_ be there because the due-date says 0000-00-00, and yet they are still there. And while I'm throwing out bug fix requests, I'll throw in a feature request too: I think everyone would love to have user designated default nameservers automatically assigned to new and TBR registrations.
