I have been in discussion with several members via phone and private message where we have been actively discussing who catchdrop is and where he came from.

Posted on dn.ca as the public profile is...

CatchDrop

I verified him but only because he supplied business email address and such.

The question is still...

Who is he?

Where did he come from?

How did Beta come out of the blue completely under the radar?

How did he get the experience to run it and bring it to fruition.

I have been doing some research and will be posting more in this topic as my information is verified but I have a lot of questions here, and that seems to be the same with other members.

Lets discuss this, I invite catchdrop to join and be open with the process. We are being asked to supply credit card info and drivers license, at least we should be able to ask the questions of ownership and get some sort of response to assure the company is transparent and we know where we stand.

Website is copy of DropCatch.com

It can be an off the shelf bidding software, here in Canada WHC, Canspace & All.ca use the same software package as a base and they all modify it to their personal needs, much the same as we do with the Xenforo software here at dn.ca, we just had to buy the licence.

Whoa, I'm not sure I like the public interrogation of this individual of a brand new business. Some people are certainly going to be suspicious because of the nature of auctions and the fact we don't see new players very often. But this all might be more appropriate if the business was pulling a scam, ripping people off, not paying out funds or whatever (such as Rob Monster and Epik). And I understand that being curious is natural and I feel like discussing it privately is fine, but this thread feels very much like a witch hunt or something when I've seen no real evidence of anything bad going to deserve this.

Nobody is implying anything untoward, but unlike similar businesses where the owners are transparant about ownership, this one is very secretive buried in holding companies. I did some digging and found some things I personally am not posting but if one looks hard enough they can be found on the open web.

The guessing games will continue until the details come forth and as long as nobody is publishing private addresses I don't see any issues.

I would caution members to respect the privacy of individuals but companies are fair game. By nature companies should publish information about ownership, especially if they want your personal information like drivers license and credit card.

In retrospect I'm a bit cautious having given my credit card details to a company I know nothing about. I received PM's and phone calls from other members questioning ownership as well.

So as a public company it is best they step forward and clear it up or topics like this will continue.

So no, it is not an interrogation, it is simply due prudence before we give away our credit cards and personal information to someone we don't know.

Since someone who works for or runs CatchDrop is a member here on this Forum, can they be asked (again) by MapleDots @MapleDots to introduce themselves and tell us more about their background? I would imagine that them taking the five minutes to do that will alleviate some of the concerns others here have expressed. A little bit of transparency could go a long way, especially when the majority of this service's potential customers are the folks who are members of this forum.

What's the mystery? I almost know nothing about other registrars or their owners whereas here it looks like you already dug up everything about the guy and his companies/websites. What more info are you looking for?

Esdiel @Esdiel we know exactly who the operators of WHC are, they are probably the most transparent company I know of and I can recommend them to the members in a heartbeat. WHC-FM @FM is involved and well known in the industry, he was a hand picked member of the whc team. All that said, I have never been asked for my drivers license from them. I gave them my credit card and that is it.

myID is forever old and has a long established history. I dug into their background a while back and even though I have an account there I decided there were too many anomalies and I was not comfortable dealing there. A lot of members have been doing business with them for years and they know their good and bad points so every member has to make their own decisions on using them.

catchdrop is brand new to us and I have received a number of messages and phone calls with concerns. I did give them my credit card information but the more I dig into the background (and I have more than macman has supplied) the more I want to assure we are dealing with a Canadian entity, especially since they keep asking me for my drivers license. Even their information at cira is incomplete and it gives me an uneasy feeling that they would be collecting our members personal information without them supplying the same.

Therefore I cannot recommend their service, nor can I endorse it. I cannot give them my drivers license until we find out more about the company. Shareholders are from the USA, information at cira is incomplete, the address in Quebec is generic etc etc.

I had a member express concerns the company was not who they say they are and the more I thought about it the more I realized they did not actually say anything about who they are. So it is only with caution that I am saying every member has to make their own decision based on their level of comfort. My comfort level is not high enough to give an unknown company my credit card and drivers license.

Now if the CEO came in, introduced himself, told us what he did before, how the company came to be then it would instill a lot more confidence for us to hand over the required personal information.

All that said I have so much info being sent to me that I am getting a headache trying to sort through it, the rumours are flying all over the place and it needs to be put to bed so we can all go on with TBR as normal.

What do we know about MyID or Namespro?

Exactly but they have a long established history and members are using them upon the recommendation of other members.

I have a member who thinks there is a possibility that catchdrop might even be myid in disguise. I was told dealing with them had lots of similarities to myID.

I personally cannot say anything about that because I have limited history with myID whereas this member has had a number of dealings with them.

Thinking about it I cannot discount the members concern because it looks like myID is winding down their website while this new entity comes in with a slick interface obviously purchased from a similar company.

So I understand we all want to get on with TBR but if the Epik/masterbucks situation has taught us anything is that we have to be leery of new software/bells/whistles and approach the new player carefully.

I am looking forward to hearing from catchdrop to set our minds at ease.

If CatchDrop is anything like MyID they won’t care whether you use them or not. At the end of the day when a TBR player catches domains. You are forced to play by their rules. If CIRA is okay with them as a registrar and TBR player surely you can’t still be worried about it? And if you are shouldn’t you be pushing CIRA for answers?

Either way you won’t get the answers you want. We are all at the mercy of the options we have. If you choose to not allow yourself to participate it only hurts yourself. That’s the problem here.
