I think that was predictable. .Net has no clear cut purpose any more. .Org does. And I think a TLD has to have a purpose to be successful long term.

And once ORG dropped the "charitable requirement" and let any business operate under it, that opened the floodgates and virtually ensured it would supersede NET.
