Country flag
Google is going to stop using country-code TLDs for its web sites around the world.

The company said today that “country-level domains are no longer necessary” because it’s become so good at localization that it doesn’t need to have search users visit their local ccTLD domain to figure out where they are.

All of its ccTLD sites will start redirecting to google.com over the coming months, Google said in a blog post. The only impact users will see is having to re-enter search preferences, it said.

The move is a bit of a blow, albeit a bearable one, to ccTLD registries, which will no longer have their brand associated with the internet’s most-popular web service. Google.com is already the most-visited domain in the world.

I think this is a very stupid decision, as I always feel better knowing I'm at Google.ca, as it easily allows me to search via Canada, even if I'm on a proxy.

Now, I can just imagine going to Google.ca on a proxy and being shown geo-options for the Netherlands.🤦‍♂️🤦‍♀️

Google is becoming less and less relevant, does it really matter what they say at this point?

Exactly, this happens all the time when traveling. I think it’s a big mistake too. Imagine you’re on vacation and you’re trying to plan for your next stop in a different country and google keeps trying to say no you’re not there. Look at these
local results instead.

Still sucks to see a company say “screw you cctlds, we’re too big to give a rats ass about you and your country’s pride”

It's more like:

"Now that we've consolidated to a single site, we can fire three-quarters of our dev team (but not the DEI hires!)."

This plan is globalization at its worst.

Google still doesn't support HTML signatures on Gmail Android but they focus on this crap lol

Pride = racist, as most techies would say

Google can't profit from ccTLDs but can profit from nTLDs they are selling. Sinking ccTLDs can only benefit them. Then again, easy to understand why Google doesn't need to use ccTLDs anymore but it's not like they'll drop google.ca either.
