just a reminder of the post TBR rgistration auctions. See the domains themselves or contact support@baremetal.com . Auctions scheduled to close Wednesday during the TBR run.

buylocal.ca ($750): up for auction!
Some quick links for automatic domain valuations:
From dynadot: "...captures the essence of supporting local businesses. Perfect for a marketplace or platform dedicated to promoting and selling locally sourced products, this domain resonates with customers who value their community and are eager to make purchases that benefit local economies". (Good timing!)
!! There are over 160 .ca domains that match %buy%local%.ca

whistle.ca ($250): up for auction!

Go Daddy ( $6298 US)
From dynadot: "fun and lively", simple, memorable.
There are about 200 .ca domains containing whistle but not containing whistler (which is found in almost 1500 domains)... whistlestop, whistleblower, bell+whistle being common themes.

Great Timing!

Nevermind, I just got my answer.

I do seem some strange stuff with the new format, such as obvious "new bidder" changes (with the color on my bid displaying RED), but it just shows a 'new sale price' instead of 'NEW HIGH BIDDER' notation. It may be that the bidding system is correct, but it's displaying incorrect colors, or the other way around.

C/ 350 2025/05/21 11:42:27 .85769 new sale price

I admit I had a tough time figuring out what's was going on here when I was bidding, as compared to the prior version of the auction bidding system.

yeah, I see what baremetal is trying to do, a linear timestamped format is a little more flexible as the previous version with columns and rows wouldn't handle many bidders very well. So in theory this format should be pretty straight forward. I understand that "new sale price" doesn't mean it is necessarily the new high bidder, only "new high bidder" does that. What format would make it clearer? Since it looks like they're making changes, now is the probably the time to make suggestions.

Is this a clearer format? And should it be reversed with latest bid on top for convenience? Or chronological like it currently is?

blah, trying to keep it simple. and I'm more than a little shocked to hear anyone thinking the old 2-d layout was clearer. It was also an ugly mess to display.

trying for: "this is a bid, this is what happened". Carrying forward the current winner? I can do that, but IMHO that would be confusing in reverse order. To be honest, I'd probably refuse to display it in reverse order, it wouldn't make any sense.

AFAIK bid history is accurate (and it is tested).

Colors are (currently) rendered in a display layer I can't test automatically, I will attempt to replay today's auctions to verify whether we had them right or wrong (given the reports, it seems likely we had some of them wrong). My apologies for that... we will have it fixed for next week.

It's TBR, lots and lots of "rinse and repeat" ... and lots of the system is actively being rewritten. Should be some new auction types soon.

-Tom

(edit: definitely appears that we showed some tieing bids as winning (green), when they were not. very sorry.)

The reverse order was simply so that the most recent/relevant data was at the top rather than having to scroll - but it does add some extra confusion.

I found the issue. I made some database changes and got burned by an issue with aggregate SQL functions. The app was getting the timestamp from your first bid instead of from the maximum $$ bid. Consequently it was showing your late tieing bids as winning when they were not. Both of you got burned by that (because you guys started bidding early). Very sorry.

Fix implimented (in the next version of the code), and an automated test written to make sure the problem stays fixed. -Tom

So can you tell me which bidder I was for Whistle, as the auction was immediately deleted from my account, and only BuyLocal.ca was there when I looked.

The only bidder that makes sense is E (I was the first auction bidder on the 19th), but I bid a second time after that, and was in the lead both times before being outbid, but I only see non-pre-auction bidders E and F present with 1 bid each. Either I was fever-dreaming that I bid twice or it doesn't follow.

Now that makes sense, as the bidding page stated I was winning, but my auction page showed RED that I was losing.

So it's all fixed up for next week?

you were F, new high bidder with your 300 bid. I don't see a bid from you on the 19th.

Looks like I was shooting my mouth off when I said this burned you. I assumed you had bid multiple times.
(instead, you're using the system as intended, bid what it's worth to you and leave it.)

(slightly updated display: includes "no change" bids, like the second $50 bid ... done because the online system shows them.)

Winner: C @ 425

But B would have gotten burned. His first bid ($50) was ahead of C's $200 (first) bid, so the system would have shown his $425 bid as if it was placed before C's.

There would have been similar issues along the way. C's $250 bid would have shown as being earlier than E's $250. Same for C's $300 bid... but B's first bid was ahead of C's first bid, so C's $350 bid was shown correctly and they immediately raised it... B's $425 bid on the other hand :(

The net effect was people would have quit bidding (because the system said they were winning when they were not).

I've re-instated the (finished) whistle.ca auction, so you can check it if you wish. (buylocal.ca is still in the system because I'm still waiting on the client for the last steps.)

My display above is actually bids, where as the display in the system is sale price. You can convert between them with some thought as long as a competing bid goes high enough to reveal it (and clearly, showing both would be useful).

No, I never got burned and I was just trying to figure out the system, as what I would see on the Individual Bids Page was not what I would see on my main Order Page, which was very confusing. I hope that was due to the date issue that's been fixed. I think RLM mentioned he experienced the same Red/Green issue to me as well.

As for the second bid, I am certain I tried to bid $350 (my high was $400 so I was not going to $425) on the 21st but it might have been a case where the "click" didn't go through (this 'dead click' happens to me once in a while on Firefox) and I moved on, then closed the browser down later without checking. My Order Page showed Green (in error) so I think I just assumed it went through. But I wasn't going over $400, so no burn here with a $425 win.

That 'dead click' actually happened to me on Grape recently, as you need to be really precise on their buttons to hit the 'sweet spot'. Luckily I checked that time. :p
