These greedy registries are literally pissing in the pool and killing the domain business. I can't count the number of times a potential buyer has inquired on a .COM/.CA/ORG/etc. and their first question is "what is the renewal rate?".
In a logical world run by normal humans, that shouldn't even be a question.
It's like the inverse of supply and demand.
High prices because of less demand.
