Wow, so many member candidates (before endorsement).

Election : Member Nominees – CIRA

Read the profiles and endorse your favourite.

The forum is a zoom call this year. With a couple of days advance notice, only.

I sent them the following email:

Seems like a weird short notice decision, unless I missed a previous annoucement. One could thing that the idea is to reduce the numbers of attendees.
a) How long is the call scheduled for?
b) Will there be a recording?
c) Do we have the ability to submit questions if we can't attend?

Hi Frank, the date of the meet and greet has been on the website since March. It has also been in multiple member communications.

Election : Board Election – CIRA

We added a live candidate meet and greet to increase the number of people who engage with candidates prior to voting. I can assure you we want as many members as possible to attend :)

The event is scheduled from 1-2:30 pm, there will be a recording, questions can only be asked at the event, either typed or audio.

Thanks Spencer @Spencer . I must have missed some of the emails then, my apologies - I think I wrote that that I may have missed announcements in my email; which I guess is the case.

Since the subject of the emails was seemingly the same as in previous years (well at least last year's) I didn't actually open them this time around, since I didn't expect a change to the process. I only see the email from this morning, but I did delete the endorsement emails, so it may have been mentioned there.

Two other CIRA members in my family tell me that they didn't receive today's email yet, even though they have received prior emails for this election.

Spencer @Spencer : Also checked an archived version of the CIRA website from September 10th and
no time and venue/format was mentioned:

Get to know the final candidates - join them for a virtual meet & greet on September 18, 2025

The new note that is there now is much more visible. Thank you for that. I appreciate that you're participating here and hope that CIRA remains open for constructive criticism.

Not sure what you're seeing but this is the update from March 2, 2025.

I'm sorry you were unaware but I can assure you out goal is to get more engagement. In previous years we would be lucky to get 20 members on the forum.

This does not mention a time and the fact that there was a change. The first time I heard of the time and format was in a email communication from this morning and it's on the website now. Two other member's did not receive this morning's email.

We didn't know the time in March. We only finalized it last week once we knew who the candidates were.
Understood. This echos my point that potentially this is too short of a notice. It was for me, but it looks like I may be able to free up the time. Let's hope it leads to more (and varied) engagement. I'm looking forward to it.

The meeting is on now... Chat is disabled. Access info was emailed.

Candidates get to present themselves and then you can ask questions. Voting on questions is available.

Posting a recording of the session is planned.

The virtual meet and greet is still ongoing as I type this up. I'm really disappointed in this format. I'm of course biased as I asked a question that (I think) was misunderstood based on a couple candidates who volunteered responses. Had this been done in a text forum it would have been far easier to provide that clarity.

Trying to compress something like this to under 90 minutes with 9 candidates attending (with two regrets) is simply not enough time.

Scary when some board candidates claim it's not relevant if they have registered a domain before... even if the board mostly has governance function, knowing the industry should help.

I am disappointed that my question was not addressed during the Q&A session today, especially given the increasing domain name renewal fees and escalating operational costs at CIRA. I seek a direct response from each CIRA board candidate:

Q. Do you commit to minimizing discretionary spending and reducing the costs of operating the .ca Registry?

(Please respond with a simple Yes or No.)

Thank you for joining, I like that you are always there. I upvoted your question too, but I'm not sure why they gave questions by raising the hand a priority over questions submitted by text, seems unfair and isn't really common practice when both is offered.

I'm not sure any of the candidates are even here to answer your question.

FM @FM you'll probably find the proposed amendments to bylaw 1 insightful. Change #2 as on that page.

AGM : Amendments to CIRA’s By-law – CIRA

I must admit I was becoming anxious on how long the call was going so I wasn't paying as close attention as I wanted when that topic was being discussed. It would stand to reason that being a member is a very low barrier of entry to being a board member, so there's no (good) excuse IMO on that one.

I admit I was kinda surprised at that too, hence why I jumped in with a question - not knowing what their format was going to evolve to. Definitely a consequence of the .... odd .... format. I think the live/virtual Q&A is only good for two reasons:

  • Creating an artificial scarcity which may lead to increased turnout.
  • Accessibility for those who find typing up questions challenging (but hey, accessibility is for everyone so....I certainly like having the option.)

I'm not sure any of the candidates are even here to answer your question.

Unlikely I'd guess. I only learned about this forum this year, never knew it existed. If only there were a (semi)official forum to use ....

I got the email about the amendments for the AGM after the candidate forum was over at 15:10 .

(Reading subtext that may not be there) - hate to say it but that might be on you. Those amendments have been available to members AFAIK along with original notice of the meeting. All meeting materials were provided on the AGM 2025 page from the moment I knew about the meeting's date and time.
