I just think the story is (as usual) a pile of mythical hyperbole to get attention and clicks. I bet the owner also walked uphill to school both ways.
On the other hand, it is great to get those X million dollar sales out there to the general public, as it might filter down to the business leaders in Canada, assuming most of them can read.

That's my point. These guys are very well-known premium domain investors with a LOT of serious sales to their credit. And now we have a story that portrays them like they registered Whisky.com "cuz they like whisky" and 19 years later have a big windfall out of nowhere.

Imagine if the Domain King got "rags to riches" headlines like this in 2025 for all his million dollar sales?
It was free and he was running on gut instinct.
19 years later, he sold it for $3.1 million.
Here’s how it happened
Castello was a musician-turned-entrepreneur in LA.
He liked Scotch, and he frequently played at the Whisky a Go Go nightclub.
So he typed “http://Whisky.com” into the registrar.
Done. Domain acquired.
Wow, I guess the Castello Bros can finally move out of their tenement in the ghetto...

ah, I see what you mean, I didn't even read it that closely to realize that this was nearly a decade ago. So it might have been a legit headline back then, but now it is really just clickbait. If you'd have said "clickbait." instead of "smells like shit" then it would have made more sense.
How you build a story around a domain can really drive its value lol.
