We've seen it too many times, someone forgets to renew a domain, and boom, it's listed on an auction site the next day.

From a business side, sure, it's "legal." But is it right?
Did you get it back or someone else took it?
Any tricks you use now to make sure it never happens again?

I'm a fan of minimizing the number of registrars I deal with so when important domains come due I tend to transfer them to my preferred registrars.

One of the most important things is to make sure your registrar can sort in order of expiry, then renew about 6 months ahead and turn on auto renew on the important domains to make sure you are covered if you get sick and are incapacitated.

As far as forgetting to renew, if you forget maybe being a domain investor is not quite the right business for you.

Early on I let domains go that I shouldn't have let go viewed with today's view, but they just seemed too expensive.

I also missed some renewals at one time as I got too busy with something else. One of those domains in particular, I remember buying back from someone else who caught them in the drop, some I got in auctions, others I never recovered.

One that kinda hurt the most, is one I bought for $500, didn't renew and that was then picked up and trademarked by someone else... Oh well. Unlikely they would have bought it from me though.

Today I often err on the side of autorenewal and wait wayyyyy to long before letting domains go. Oh and I also paid a redemption fee a few times.

That’s solid advice, Maple! Do you think diversification’s worth it despite the added management hassle?

Hard lesson, FM. So do you think those redemption fees ended up being worth it in hindsight? lol ;)
