The UK Parliament wants your input on a new proposed law that would give the police powers to take down domain names and IP addresses.

The broad-ranging Criminal Justice Bill 2023 (pdf) would give police the ability to obtain court orders requiring registries and registrars to suspend domains believed to be used in criminal activity.

How does everyone feel about this, the UK seems to be becoming one of the most monitored places with cameras and 15 minute cities everywhere.

I can understand taking down a scam site but how long before the police takes down outspoken websites that say things they don't like.

Where do we draw the line?

If it were not a website and someone was simply speaking it, could the police make him stop if they did not like what he had to say?

We are travelling down a dangerous road to total government control.

I am fine with this if they have the power to take down pedos, child porn site, sites selling illegal drugs. I don't believe this will effect many in here.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but don't they already do this in Canada?

But the problem is that these potentially-intrusive laws always tend to be abused by someone, like suddenly a business dispute is "believed to be a crime" (because it's initiated by Bell, Rogers or Galen or other important "stakeholders" that Trudeau is beholden to) and suddenly the contended site is gone.

There are always good intentions to sell this type of "extended law" to the public, but then lawyers, politicians and the billionaires tend to pervert it into something else that serves their purposes.
