The TBR really doesn't fit the current Canadian market, and I can only assume people are buying for 5-10 years down the line.

Agreed, and there is no perfect bidding strategy - you just need to determine your max price per domain and stick hard to that limit, no matter which bidding strategy you choose.
You make money on the buy and the old "just pay more than anyone else" strategy is a sucker's game.
