If you saw my Sold post, you'll know what triggered the topic.

So I had an offer today on a one-worder that I had priced at $15K, we've been negotiating a good month now, and I'm not backing down and they're not coming up. But today the offer was, my partner is a big lawyer, how about they give you $15K in services?

My thoughts:

a) Now I don't feel too bad about the price if your partner is a big lawyer.
b) I haven't even used a lawyer in over a decade, and if I did, I already have a great relationship with a top notch industry specific one.
c) I have real cash invested in domains, so I wouldn't ever do it for 100% services, unless I really needed to use those services immediately, and only if I thought you were a top notch provider of said services.
d) Clearly they like the domain enough that they haven't gone with something else yet. But I'm not sure this is really going anywhere. At this point I'm stressing the payment or lease plan. If not, I'll be sticking a fork in this negotiation.

So... after the long setup, here's the question:

Has anyone sold a domain for anything other than 100% cash that they're willing to reveal? Just wondering if there's been any other fun or creative ideas out there.

no, always been cash for me.

I once sold a domain to a junior mining exploration company that was about to go public, and offered to take shares instead of cash, thinking it would be better for them since they were issuing millions of shares anyway. For me it would have been something different and fun to try just for the experience of doing a sale that way, plus it would only have been in the 20 or 30 thousand shares range to them. keep in mind a lot of these junior miners usually start out in the 20 or 30 cents per share range, but can go higher on a run. they wanted to keep it cash, which most serious buyers seem to want to do, other than a payment plan or equity.

I've had a tiny handful of people phone or email me with a great idea for one of my domains to partner on, but it never got beyond that lol.

@rlm like you posted somewhere else here, the dream is to get that call from a seasoned entrepreneur who's done it before and wants your generic domain for their next well funded venture, and to give some equity stake for it (and then it succeeds wildly ofcourse). I love stories of people who took a small stake in a company or venture in return for their capital/services/goods and it turned into something huge. Like Michael Jordan and Nike (all the other big basketball players of that era turned Nike down because they were new, and Converse were the big shoe at the time), or Franco Nevada who bought a 2% royalty on a mining claim in Nevada in the 80's for $2 million, Barrick then found gold there and built a mine, and it's payed them out over $1 billion to today, and still paying - they saw the ad for the royalty in a box ad in the Reno Gazette newspaper! I guess the other dream is Amazon showing up with a blank cheque for your generic domain.

I suspect they just figured that the shares would be complicated and more work than the cash.

I'm sure there's some good stories out there with domains, sometimes people may not be able to talk about them though.

Almost, I had a verbal agreement to trade GamingComputers.ca for a $2,500 Computer. It was a well known gaming computer supplier, but communication stopped when covid started.

Nothing I own is of huge value, so I'm open to just about any deal.. Development work, electronics, chickens you name it I might be game lol.

haha, well if you needed a computer, that would worth it. I'm a mac guy, so unless apple wants something, speaking of which, didn't applecare.ca drop??? yes it did, someone bought it at canspace! Who's gonna fess up to that one?? Wasn't me! Maybe they can negotiate for a top-end mac pro ($50K computer).

The problem is most people offer services or things you don't need. But if I needed it, I'm game. I might pass on the chickens though. But farm-fresh eggs delivered weekly I would take!

Well I was raised on unix mainframes at university and in my first career. I had a couple PC's but hated it, so I went Linux. Did that for a bunch of years but was always frustrated by the lack of playing nicely with other devices. Then I realized mac had a linux backend too, bought one and never looked back, its really the best of both worlds. Sounds like we need to have a phone convo about hackintosh...

Oh, and "domaining" is my "gaming"...

Sorry, this is O/T.

Until earlier this year I used a 2009 Mac Mini(!) with some additional RAM and an SSD added by me... I felt comfortable with it too due to the FreeBSD based shell you could pull up... Right now I'm on Windows 10, but still have some Unix based systems at my disposal.

Considering this, I'm happy to be off Macs:

TLDR: Mac OSX now automatically sends a notification to Apple whenever you start any APP.

Yes, I leased a .com. That was when Rick was hot on the idea, and the deal would have netted us around 300k. I think it even showed up on DnJournal. The company got itself into too many deals and folded with its bills unpaid. Bummer. o_O

I also offer interest-free financing for up to five years with 15-30% down. I've done a few deals with that. All paid and all transferred. Being retired now, I prefer this. It's a nice income every month. Domain stays with us till paid.

I also rented a domain for around 8 months before he defaulted. It was a tourist domain, and I don't think his business did well.

Yeah, I think the lease options makes so much sense for a startup (since most businesses fail anyways). Yet very few go for it. I seem to always have one or two financing or lease options running, mostly small time stuff though. Its probably more work for me than its worth, but I like to help some people out. I have two young entrepreneurs on board right now.

yeah, but you know nearly every app you run on your phone does the same... every virus protection software does the same, I would totally expect windows would do it too...

Anything to move a domain. When you consider the businesses that could use what we have stored away I almost feel guilty about holding them back. I figured out at one point that if sold 3-4 domains a month I'd be pushing 100 before running out. Heaven only knows if we'll be using the internet by that time. Maybe ear antennas.

The problem is not that individual apps do this, it's the OSX that stores whenever you open any app AND they do not allow you to turn it off. I believe in Windows and Android is his optional, indeed.

Bitcoin. All I want is BTC for my domains. Sold some to a buyer in South America. Payment and domain transfer happened in minutes once we agreed. Perfect pair. Pure digital assets. #Freedom

I’ve had two different experiences where the buyer did not want to pay cash and both times it was due to a domain that they let drop in TBR and they didn’t want to pay my price.

The first time, I agreed to lease the domain for one year. I still own the domain today.

Second instance I agreed on cash plus advertising on their website. He never came through with the advertising and that was the last time I ever sold a domain like that.

Sometimes you have to learn the hard way. It has worked out though since now I will only accept cash. It’s the only thing that’s guaranteed.

How do you work escrow into the transaction? Are there services for that?
