CIRA introduces an iconic Canadian symbol as the new face of .CA domains

OTTAWA, Sept. 14, 2022 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) — The wait is almost over for fans of the CBC hit show, Dragons’ Den! With the new season kicking off tomorrow, CIRA is unveiling its newest online business coach – none other than the infamous Canadian goose itself. The brand will debut its ‘Choose success, choose .CA’ campaign, with the launch of a 30-second commercial tomorrow night. And trust us, it will give you goosebumps!

On the heels of CIRA’s three-year “Make your website true north strong” advertising campaign, it was time to get wisdom from one of Canada’s iconic symbols. The Canadian goose with its persuasive look and its assertive honk will help entrepreneurs make the right choice when getting their business online. As 85% of Canadians say they prefer a .CA when supporting local businesses, this not-so-silly goose will accompany the next wave of entrepreneurs on their road to success to make sure they choose a local website domain.

Airing on September 15th at 8 p.m. ET on CBC and CBC Gem, the ad also debuts CIRA’s official sponsorship of season 17. This new light-hearted and humorous campaign plays on one of Canada’s most feared animals thanks to another collaboration with award-winning agencies: Giants & Gentlemen Advertising Inc., Push Media Inc. and Search Warrant.

The fully integrated ‘Choose success, choose .CA’ campaign will be rolled out on October 3rd via traditional and connected TV in the Greater Toronto, Vancouver and Montreal areas as well as social and digital platforms.

Executive quotes

“Entrepreneurs or creators who want to be recognized as a local, Canadian brand online should look no further than getting a .CA domain. It’s clear that Canadians love supporting Canadian creators and a .CA is the iconic, recognizable symbol of Canada on the internet. Our new Canadian goose ambassador looks forward to persuading thousands of Canadian businesses to get online with a .CA domain name!” — Paul Sarkozy, Marketing Director, .CA by CIRA

“Geese are beautiful creatures, and a symbol of Canada. They’re also total jerks. We decided to lean into both of those things to remind Canadian small business owners that choosing a .CA means choosing success.” — Alanna Nathanson, Co-founder and Chief Creative Officer, Giants & Gentleman.

When it comes Corporate Spokesmen, the Canadian Goose would be my last choice, as in many parts of Canada they have taken over, the species is viewed no better than winged rats.

I beg to differ. They might be overpopulating but calling them winged rats as if their pigeons isn't really fair. I mean they're usually considered a majestic animal and there are big brands like Canada Goose, so they do have their appeal. I rather them choose a goose over a beaver anyway. A grizzly may have been cool too but maybe a bit too ferocious.

Canadian Goose are definitely aggressive too, and fearless, but the commercial seems to play on that which works well imo. Ozzy Man calls them "Canadian Cobra Chickens" lol:

That is the point, depending on where you live, the Canada Goose is the pigeon... or the seagull. These birds are absolutely hated in many parts of the country and are akin to vermin.

When a flock rolls into a public park and the "bird mob" starts aggressively chasing little kids and pets around. it's no fun and games. And their excrement is a real treat too.

I used to live in Toronto and the seagulls were horrible and would aggressively chase people with food, pecking at them, clawing - it was insane, like a scene from The Birds.

But I moved away and haven't seen any seagull incidents since, but that doesn't mean they're no longer a problem, it's just that I don't live in Toronto anymore.

I got attacked by both in Toronto and seagulls are the most aggressive ones.

I like the ad, lets see if it converts to more offers on .ca domains.

I didn't doubt you @DomainRecap but I will admit I didn't know geese were such a problem aside from attacking people but that's often funny to watch (on youtube anyway lol).

I quickly looked into it and apparently it's a manmade problem. That's because we almost drove them to extinction, then reintroduced them in cities across the country to help their numbers rebound, and that was the big mistake they say. Most of those never learned to migrate and cities created a sanctuary for them with lots of food, so their numbers are exploding now in some places. And apparently they can poop every 12 minutes lol.

I guess we can call it a "love hate relationship" like they do in this video, where I learned the above:

Yes, Idiot Environmentalists without the ability to do Math or understand the repercussions of their low-IQ decisions are certainly at play here, but at a certain point we're going to have to cull these vermin before their exploding numbers make cities totally unlivable.

HeHe, I was trying to walk through the park the other day and goose poop was everywhere.

Goose season anyone??

Vermin in my opinion!!

I spent most of my life on the ocean and never heard of, or seen, anyone get attacked by a seagull. It must be cities like Toronto and their dense populations that drive them to be so aggressive.

They should have gone with the beaver, if they're going to use animals, given the beavers are builders....
Good point, and beavers are Canada's most iconic animal (and a national symbol), but I find them a bit difficult to take too serious.

Its possible CIRA is doing rounds with different Canadian iconic animals every few years to keep things interesting. In previous years they used a lot of beavers in their advertising, moose too, and probably others. Maybe next year it will be a polar bear?

Here's the top 10 according to WWF: Canada’s 10 most iconic animals - WWF.CA

at a certain point we're going to have to cull these vermin before their exploding numbers make cities totally unlivable.

I guess one thing they're doing is destroying eggs before they hatch. Another is physically moving them to other areas.

It's getting pretty bad as I saw on the news that some people carry batons and have bought large breed, aggressive dogs to protect their families from these vermin. Geese are the ultimate weak-ass bullies (ask a farmer how to crack their necks) and you send a Mastiff or Pitbull out into a flock in the park and he'll come back with 10 in his jaws.

At a certain point it will be sawed-off shotguns. And I'm not joking as exasperated citizens are already shooting them within city limits.

And yes, the Toronto seagulls have lost all fear of man and it's likely to do with the sheer amount of tourist attractions on the waterfront and the ready food supply. Grab a some fries and gravy from a vendor and you will literally be mobbed by seagulls.

Back when Ontario Place was open, I would go down and sometimes all you could hear were the tourists screaming.

I think the commercial is kinda lame. And I don't really have a positive view of the canada goose either. Around here, they ruin the beaches, its not just the crap everywhere, its the duck/swimmer's itch they bring too.

Sounds like domainers in this thread have been through a lot. Some therapy and a visit to a petting zoo might ease the tension:)

Personally if I had to pick an animal to represent a .ca brand it would be these ones. I would like to apologize if they also trigger past trauma:)
