Not sure what CIRA is doing here because technically they are creating competition for .ca

In fact I'm pretty sure I don't like this one bit!!

what a disaster, imagine every city having it's own domain extension? or some did and some didn't? what a confusing cluster that would be.

This is already the case today (globally):

.abudhabi
.amsterdam
.barcelona
.berlin
.boston
.brussels
.budapest
.capetown
.cologne
.dubai
.durban
.gent
.hamburg
.helsinki
.ist
.istanbul
.joburg
.koeln
.kyoto
.london
.madrid
.melbourne
.miami
.moscow
.nagoya
.nyc
.osaka
.paris
.sydney
.taipei
.tokyo
.vegas
.wien
.yokohoma
.москва

I think my list is missing at least one IDN.

Also, note that .ist is for Istanbul, as is .istanbul

The point isn't that other extensions should or shouldn't be allowed, whether its good or bad or whatever. The point is that _CIRA_ should NO EFFING WAY be doing it. Full Stop. They were awarded a monopoly to run and protect .ca. Period. And there's PLENTY OF REVENUES to do exactly that. If some CIRA employees have a great idea for some other services? Great!! AWESOME!! Go start a real business with money from your own pocket and do it like every other entrepreneur does. Don't use the .CA monopoly to fund whatever whims and grand schemes you have. CIRA exists for .CA, and those .CA revenues should be used for running and promoting .CA - nothing more. Its truly a simple point of principle. And when they're allowed to keep pushing the boundaries, where does it stop?
