They're increasing DAN's commission rate by 5% and reducing Afternic commission rate from 20% to 15%. 25% commisson if yoru domain sells on Uniregistry, Afternic, or DAN and you don't use their lander.

As a valuable seller, you appreciate the importance of a seamless marketplace that offers easy, fast and secure domain ownership transfers. At Dan, that's been a core part of our mission as we strived to reinvent the domain trading experience.

By joining forces with GoDaddy, we aim to create the best end-to-end solutions to trade and monetize domains for domain owners around the world. Here are some examples of how we’re doing just that from our recent product updates.

  • Enabling access to Afternic’s distribution network to increase your sales velocity
  • Revamping the Buyer Control Panel to better manage conversations and lease-to-own conversion
  • Integrating GoDaddy CashParking to connect directly to your Dan landers
  • Making portfolio management improvements so it’s easier to manage your domains
  • Unveiling access to Dan brokerage specialists to increase your chance of selling and selling price since you can outsource your negotiation to the best
  • And, we’re just getting started!
Together, we plan to bring the best of each into a unified platform that serves your best interest.

As we work towards a unified platform, it’s important to align the disparate commission models currently in place. On February 1, 2023, the following commission structure will go into effect.

  • 15% commission for domains sold that are pointed to nameservers at Dan, Afternic, or Uniregistry; regardless of where it sells on the network or through the landers directly.
  • 25% commission for domains sold that are not pointed to nameservers at Dan, Afternic, or Uniregistry.
*Note: Import your own leads will continue to operate at the 5% commission rate

This new commission model rewards sellers choosing to do more business with our platform by using any of our For Sale Lander options and opt-in to Afternic’s Distribution network. If your domain points to one of our nameservers (Dan, Afternic, or Uniregistry) when it sells, then you automatically receive a 15% commission rate. For those already using Afternic’s distribution network, this provides a significant reduction in commission rate versus the 20% charged by Afternic.

Our goal with this change is to align with other marketplaces and reflect the value provided to Dan customers, including automated payout and domain transfers, advanced portfolio management and near 24x7 customer support.

We didn’t take this step lightly. We carefully reviewed numerous options. Here’s one example of impact to an average seller who sales 40% of their domains on Dan and 60% on Afternic.

Old Plan

Platform Sales Revenue Commission Rate Commission Payout to Seller
Afternic$60,00020%$12,000$48,000
Dan$40,0009%$3,600$36,400
Totals$100,000$15,600$84,400

New Plan

Platform with domain pointed to Afternic, Dan or Uniregistry Sales Revenue Commission Rate Commission Payout to Seller
Afternic$60,00015%$9,000$51,000
Dan$40,00015%$6,000$34,000
Totals$100,000$15,000$85,000
$600 increase in payout to seller
*Note: For those using long-term installments, subject to VAT or other situations unique to the seller, the net amount paid to the seller could differ from the examples above.

This updated commission model can become even more advantageous when utilizing Lease-To-Own options where we will continue to split the service fees with the seller.

For those not yet using the Afternic distribution network, we highly recommend opting in today so you can see the increased sales for yourself. You opt into Afternic by following the directions here (https://news.dan.com/220185-dan-com-product-update-7)

Our focus on creating the best unified platform for you is an important output of this change. Here is a quick preview what’s coming soon:

  • Adding Lease-To-Own to Dan’s lead importer, expanding two of our most popular services to create more liquidity for your domains.
  • Leveraging new data tools to optimize our sales lander conversion to increase your sell-through rate
  • Experimenting with up-front down payment options to help reduce the cancellation rate on Lease-To-Own transactions and provide more flexibility for sellers.
Happy Selling!

With kind regards,

Dan

We knew it was going to happen and since I have no name servers pointed to dan I will have to reconsider doing business there.

At 25% with no pointed name servers it effectively closes the window of doing business with any godaddy service for me and I will probably remove my domains from godaddy auction, dan, and the few I have on afternic.

Forcing pointing of nameservers to godaddy services pretty well means my homepage and escrow will be my means going forward.

I kept my domains at godaddy because of the ease of listing but with that gone there is no need for me to pay higher registration fees anymore and I will probably start my move to whc.

So basically all my decisions have been made for me.

The 25% is the most insane part of the change, as it's obviously a tactic to push sellers away from Dan and towards GoDaddy and Afternic at (cough) "only" 20% commission.

This is obviously a strategy to shut down Dan over the longer term.

15% to sell through Afternic distribution is good if you're already using it.

I don't like how you have to use DAN/Uniregistry/Afternic nameserver to get the 15% commission rate. I forward my domains to DAN landing page.

Thank you @Bob Hawkes

So the 5% bring my own lead helps, that means I have to remove my domains from dan this week so I can use the "lead" function when needed.

So now to forward all my domains to my personal contact form

That is a huge job for my son to start this weekend.

So the 5% bring my own lead helps, that means I have to remove my domains from dan this week so I can use the "lead" function when needed.

I'd just leave them there and ignore any offers, as you'll just need to add them back anyway if you bring a lead for the 5%.

That would be ok but as soon as someone makes an offer there the lead is logged so I can never use the 5% feature.

I have never paid 20% commission and the 25% is out of the question so for me my own contact form is the only way to go.

See it here for red.ca: MapleDots | Inquiry

…and they try and sell it like they are doing this as a bonus to you

"This new commission model rewards sellers choosing to do more business with our platform by using any of our For Sale Lander options"

Moving from 9% from 15% is somehow a "reward"? I don't think that word means what you think it does.

That would be ok but as soon as someone makes an offer there the lead is logged so I can never use the 5% feature.

I'm not sure how that would work if the exact customer placed an offer, you refused or ignored it, and then they came through your lander with another offer that you then took to Dan...

Either way, I hate monopolies and I also hate Late-Stage Capitalism (where everyone is trying to steal your $$$) - the combination might spell End of Times.

And Maple, your article title is not correct.

Dan commission rates are going up by 6-16%, not 5%.

Time limit is up. @MapleDots can you update the title. Thanks

Done

I have removed all domains from Dan and GoDaddy Auction

Dan was done instantly but godaddy auction says processing and will be manually approved.

All my domains now forward to my dn.ca marketpage at: DN.ca / Market / MapleDots

From there on each domain forwards to my contact form (I used a bulk script to handle that) and I am all set.

Now canadian sales under 10k I will handle via e-transfer at no commission.

All others I will do Escrow or Dan.com as bring your own lead.
When the bring your own lead eventually disappears I will be Escrow exclusively over 10k.

My question is about whether this blanket 15% commission for "using nameservers for Dan, Afternic, GoDaddy or Uniregistry" will apply to all 4 markets? Afternic has replied it will for sales taking place there, but nothing from GD or Uni so far.

If so, then it's a thin silver-lining to a horrible post-Christmas price-gouging announcement, but I'm hoping for more clarity from GD over the next few days.

I just got the email from Uniregistry stating that if you sell using any GD-related nameservers, then the flat rate commission will be 15%. Afternic has also confirmed this on Twitter, so that just leaves GoDaddy Auctions.

Just my luck I sold a domain at Uni yesterday at 20% and would have actually saved money under the new plan - I can't seem to catch a break.

Hi everyone, just checking in here. This is a commission alignment across all GoDaddy aftermarket platforms.

15% if you are pointing to one of the following:
  • afternic.com
  • smartname.com
  • uniregistrymarket.link
  • dan.com
  • undeveloped.com
  • internettraffic.com
  • cashparking.com

The standard 25% rate applies otherwise.
It's worth pointing out that even if you're using Dan, or Uniregistry and you get a sale through the Afternic network, you get that 15%.

Thanks for the confirmation, and it's at least somewhat of a silver lining to a very harsh post-Christmas price increase notice.

This reminds me of that Bob Newhart Christmas show where he mistakenly prints his next year's rate increase in his Christmas cards and Mr Carlin takes out a "hit" on him. But in a "not funny" way.

Thank you for clarifying James

I like using the Dan bring your own client feature and will continue to do that for non canadian sales or transactions over 5k.

The 5% is reasonable for that and quite honestly I used my market landers exclusively until dan brought in that service so I will continue to do that and have dan handle my larger sales outside of Canada.

What about alternatives? Bob Hawkes in that Twitter thread suggested Squadhelp White Label and Sedo BIN pages. Any feedback on these? His Rename.ca site looks good.
