To ensure that I'm not inadvertently registering a domain with a dubious history, it seems I need to subscribe to one or more services, which combined could cost upwards of $100 or more per month.

Not sure why you would care registering a domain with a checkered past. At reg fee any domain can be profitable. I understand if you buy a domain for several thousand or so but quite honestly when I get a nice domain for a reg fee I don't care what the domains history is.

I concur with @MapleDots in that, if I can find a great domain at cost, I don't care who owned it previously. Their loss is our gain. But I can kind of understand your concern in trying to know if the domain was used for adult or fraudulent purposes like spamming etc. But in most cases great domain names will have it's value over a period and you might be prudent not to waste your money on such services, rather using it to renew the domain for a longer duration.
