So I guess I have to brag a little about my son.

We were at the Mercedes-Benz dealership looking at some cars when we noticed the most insane domain name ever.

Are you ready for this....

Mercedes-Benz-Kitchener-Waterloo.com & mercedes-benz-kitchener-waterloo.ca

and if that is not bad enough the email address is info@mercedes-benzkw.com

My son smiled and said....

Dad lets check mbkw.ca

Guess what? It was available and he bought it right away.

I emailed my friend at:

ujetter@mercedes-Benzkw.com and asked him what he thought of uwe@mbkw.ca

Wink Wink, sow the seeds

The most confusing part about all of this was their email address is completely different from the main domain.

I told them to forward mbkw.ca to mercedes-benz-kitchener-waterloo.ca and to us @mbkw.ca for email.

Did they listen?

HeHe... nope

My son Kameron (K1D) is 13 and knows more about domaining and the value of domains than those so called smart business men.

I was looking at real estate recently and I often just take a picture of the for sale sign to follow up on later because they usually the realtors name, phone number and often a domain name. After a day out doing drive bys I came home and started going through the pictures and checking out listings. One for sale sign I took a picture of contained ONLY the realtors domain name. When I went to his website, it did not resolve! When I checked the Whois the domain name was available! Oh boy! If covid doesn’t get em....

Kitchener Waterloo. Mercedes. Lots of hyphens. First name "Uwe". Must be run by Germans ;-) But even for Germans, this domain is too long. And then the inconsistency between email and website, they must have noticed it was too long and/or thought stuffing keywords in the domain would help their SEO. Oh my.

Yeah we where out looking at cars when i noticed the website name on the side of a billboard, and i thought to myself that this was a really long name and that I should see if there was any way to shorten it. And sure enough mbkw.ca was available and now that they know there is no way they can go back to their old websire without thinking about this domain name.

Exactly and you still see a lot of these "dinosaur domains" roaming the Earth, and worse still, some think that this tactic works today.

One of my favorite examples was a company in Montreal called L'Esprit Rehab, which owned lesprit.ca, but some "SEO Expert" likely convinced them that keyword stuffing was the path to riches, so they dropped their old core-brand-match domain and switched to physio-montreal.ca - and according to Google it is now "permanently closed".

I actually believe in doing both, let me explain...

For one of my businesses I own the full three word descriptive in .ca but it forwards to a three letter acronym in .ca

The reason I have the full descriptive is I can put it on the back bumper of the company vehicle and it says exactly what we are in ca. There is no need to say anything else and somebody following may say that is an unusually long domain name but when you type it in it goes to the shorter one.

If I put the three letter acronym on the bumper it would mean nothing because it does not say what I do.

Example...

JoesPlumbingMechanical.ca then it goes to JPM.ca

JPM.ca means noting if you can ONLY advertise the domain.
For the back of a vehicle JoesPlumbingMechanical.ca is way better.

Now if he has a fully lettered up vehicle then JPM.ca would be the better choice to use.

The domain seems to work pretty well in Google. It comes up for first for mercedes benz waterloo and mercedes benz kitchener.

But it would anyway based on content & relevance, which is all Google cares about now.

Keyword stuffed domain names mean nothing, and in my example of L'Esprit, I typed in "Montreal physio" into Google to test and their center didn't even show up in the first 2 pages.

it was all other Montreal rehab centers with better content and relevance.

And that exactly how people do it in 2021.

The phone number and web address are secondary to the Company Name, Logo and Branding.

If I was searching for a Mercedes Benz dealer in Waterloo or Kitchener, I know what I would type in...
