Yeah, I'm basically doing the same

We have to spread the word, I do not want another dnf.ca happening here.
I think that forum died because it was over moderated, the investor closed so many topics to some sort of rule that members got annoyed.

I prefer to not do that here and give a lot of the moderating to members.

Two things for you...

Anybody have the contact for AndrewSchnarr and some of the .ca forum members from the other site?

You would be ideal to moderate one of the sections, maybe the "Sell Domain" section?


As far as making it, that is a non issue I signed agreements for hosting, iT, support etc for 3 years so we are not going anywhere.
Now if we are dead after three years then I think it might be time to pack it in but that's highly unlikely if we all do our part and invite people in.
 
Personally I think you should have at least 6 member levels, it gives participants something to strive for.

What about badges?

I'd say it was due to lack of unique content more than anything. It can't be just a duplicate of the same content at another forum. Getting key contributors to forego posting elsewhere is the deal breaker.

While I appreciate that offer, I prefer to not moderate. For one, I'd have to moderate myself. I just got spanked at namepoos for berating a really stupid .CA post. Sometimes a post is so egregious I can't help myself and it was well worth the spanking I knew I'd get from a moderator. Plus, I don't like committing to anything. If I want to go dark for 3 months, I don't want to feel guilty about it. And as a moderator I'd feel less inclined to add content. Content is king, not moderation.

Haha, yes, I was just joking about waiting to see if you make it, clearly I'm trying to support this.
 
Feedback:

The one thing I did like at the other place is the "Like Dislike Thank Agree Disagree" options. There are times when each of those are appropriate, it gives feedback to the poster and as well as the public, and I like the idea that it can be used to create a credibility score of the poster. Not that i've seen it be necessary very often, but occasionally some troll will pop up and flood the place with stupidity, and if a poster gets beat down enough with a bad like/dislike agree/disagree ratio, you can rate limit posts based on their negative scores. Its essentially a way to allow the public to moderate.

However, I think you'd have to have a very busy forum to make a public-moderation scheme like that useful. Primarily I just like those "Like Dislike Thank Agree Disagree" options as a low resistance way to give feedback without having to make such a trivial post like "i agree". And I like that people can disagree/dislike too without actually making a more in-your-face post saying that.

I am looking at that and will probably have it implemented, the iT guy has a whole list so I will add that.

Yes, remember it's MapleDots you're talking to, I am the king of starting topics. I stopped at DNF because it was pointless with all the closed topics.

Moderation here will be easy, we are polite Canadians and I hope we can gently guide people instead of forcing moderation on them. That is why at 100 posts they become trusted members. I might even put on member guides or something, anything except heavy handed moderation.
 
And as far as quitting other forums, I basically did that, if they won't let me talk about true Canadian topics like DN.ca then why should I post there?

Tell me what is the difference...

1. A blog posts an article on their blog.
2. Opens a topic on namepoos
3. Posts a piece of the topic with a link back to the blog.
4. On the blog members discuss it.

I was in a long conversation with Eric Lyon and told him our forum is no different and linking back and forth creates traffic for everyone. I told him I understood why they banned DNForum.com but we are no competition because we are like a blog about .ca's only. I said we should become a partner site but all he said is he will think about it. Next I know rule_violation pops up anywhere dn.ca is mentioned.

If he is going to be like that I think asking our members to support this forum instead of namepoos is warranted.

I hope I can get DomainRecap to moderate the TBR section here, he does such a good job it's too bad everything is hidden at namepoos. I would give him free reign in TBR and would never interfere with any topic, he would have exclusive mod rights in that forum unless HE designated a helper.

I have thanks activated, it puts a thanks link under your profile picture for every post. A member can thank or take it away. In your profile it show how many thanks the member has.

I have another more elaborate one planned but that might take a bit so lets us this basic one for a spell.

Well maybe you'll get your wish. I asked him if he can hear his own echo after he makes a post over there. It's either that or crickets. I told him to come join us, he said in a couple days, sounds like he's super busy right now.
 
How come I don't see any "like" options on posts? It sounds like some already see that option?

Well, they just notified me that they deleted my good bye post in that section.

I am now officially done on namepoos, I will no longer tolerate the totalitarian moderating there.

If that ever happens here I will resign and let better moderators run the board.

I have to shake my head, I just cannot believe the amount of deletions on that forum.
As Canadians do we really want to post our .ca discussion on an American board that deletes posts and topics at an epic pace?
