Leylah Fernandez - US Open Sensation (1 Viewing)

You likely heard of Leylah Fernandez this past week.

She's the 19 year old Canadian tennis player who's taken the US Open by storm, and will be playing in the championship game on Saturday. She was actually 18 when the tournament started and just turned 19 on September 6th. Her recent success has made her quite the overnight sensation and she's making headlines around the world.


After first hearing of her ongoing fairy tale story, the domainer in me had to check whether Leylah.ca was available... and it was. I knew the domain could have value, but was of the opinion she'd essentially be the only target given the uncommon spelling and other research I did. So as much as I like first name domains, I told myself I wouldn't buy it (yet at least) as I'm rooting for her and didn't want to target her.

This morning, I checked the whois for leylah.ca and guess what I see?




Should I have bought it when I had the chance? Or would it have been a greasy move? Ultimately, I feel like I probably should have bought it considering it was almost inevitable that someone else would anyway. I considered buying it just to give it to her, but it's too late for that now.

I never even thought to check the whois for LeylahFernandez.ca since I absolutely wouldn't have bought that one, but yup, that's taken too. It was registered just one day before Leylah.ca.

Do you think it's possible Leylah or someone from her team bought this one, or do you think it's another domainer? This domain is registered two years in advance, with no lander, hence my question.

Ask [notify]MaiTaiMan[/notify] about this, he's got experience in gifting domains and/or getting them to the right person. IMHO this can be the best option, also potentially help improve the image of our industry... Maybe you'd get some tickets for games in return. It still it can be a challenge to hand it over, as some of the "gifted domain" stories were showing here recently.

Interesting to see the Smartname nameservers, I forgot even forgot they were still around. Well, they are owned by GoDaddy nowadays. Wonder how many Canadian Domainers use them.
