If a client wishes to pay in Canadian dollars, but you want the transaction to take place on a marketplace, what options are there? This seems a straightforward question, but it seems most do not? Thanks for any help.

On a different but related question, do any of the Canadian registrars have any sort of bring your lead service for .ca domain names? Say I have a customer who wants to buy a .ca and pay in CDN $. I send him to the registrar where the name is registered, and he sets up an account. I tell that registrar I have a lead and we have agreed on price $$$$ in Canadian dollars for domain XX. They accept his/her payment in Canadian dollars, with my authority transfer the name to his/her account, and then pay me, minus the commission for the service. This would seem not hard, and I wonder if WHC or someone else offers it already?

Thanks,

Bob

You're right that no marketplaces accept CAD, as far as I'm aware of... but you could always use escrow.com now that they accept CAD payments. However, now that I look further into it, it appears they only accept CAD for wires, and not from credit cards or paypal?

This is according to their help pages, but maybe they do still accept CAD payments by credit card and simply haven't updated their website yet. I doubt that's the case, but they only recently started accepting CAD about a year ago.

I've been using wise.com

Easy to use, cheaper than paypal

It's not a marketplace but it works to receive funds.
I seem to have no problems with holding the domain until I get payment.
I issue an invoice, receive payment and I transfer the domain. Very rarely do I ever get someone saying they don't trust they will get the domain after payment is sent. I simply say if you want it proceed forward, if not look for something else. I don't lose any deals over it, probably because I deal mostly with Canadians.

it’s rare, but i just had a sale that insisted on using escrow, i told him no problem but just be warned that they can be a real pain in the ass if it’s your first time setting up your account. he still wanted to, and it was indeed a pain, He had to send the bank wire twice because the first time he made the account under his personal name but sent the funds from his company name and Escrow.com wouldn’t accept that.

Thanks for the replies. With the specific case, it turns out I was able to get the buyer to agree to equivalent USD and have sold it through my SH WL marketplace, but I will set up a Wise account for future flexibility in options.

So with a Wise the buyer can pay in Canadian dollars whether they have an account at Wise or not, or do they have to set up a Wise account to use that payment system.

I would still love to see a Canadian registrar set up a marketplace, or if not that at least a deal closing service, so that Canadian buyers could buy from Canadians with an all-Canadian solution. Seems like would be a win for everyone.

You can keep any currency in your wise account, i keep a Canadian dollar amount and a USD amount now. So anytime i get paid in USD, i use those funds when i pay in USD, so then there are no conversions to worry about.

If you know how to use paypal you know how to use wise. The only difference is you get a vis card and you can use it anywhere when you travel.

Escrow.com supports CAD payments/transactions, as does Escrow.domains. The registrar MyID.ca also offers a CAD 'escrow-esque' service, but only for .CA domains. Be careful with using the MyID.ca service however because, well, it's MyID.ca. ;+)

So now that you can list any domain in the Dynadot marketplace, and they take CDN (although can't set the price directly in that I think), are any people planning to try listing .ca there? 10% commission

I was thinking of giving it a go with a few of mine. I believe right now it’s just a matter of reach. How many Canadians are aware of the Dynadot marketplace? Other than the members here.

If I did it now, I would want to set a reserve as I wouldn’t want what happened to CD.ca happen to me or anyone in general.

Haven't used myid.ca/escrow/ for a long time, but might be an option.

What happened with CD.ca? Searched this forum but couldn't find anything...

Long story short, it was sold at “rightOfTheDot” auction by a well known .ca investor for a fraction of the cost of what it’s worth. Not many .ca investors knew about the auction so it went for very cheap with a very low reserve.
