Personally, I just look at what I own.

Mostly my country code .ca then .com's with a few .net, .org, .app sprinkled in.

However I managed to my first .xyz to actual use on our marketplace, that's the first extension outside .ca and .com for us to achieve this for me.

Other than that I own one more targeted .xyz and in most cases I buy those only with a possible end user in mind.

More and more now I tell domainers go ahead and register if you can think of 1-3 possible end users. If you cannot think of at least one then chances are you will be renewing for a long time.

Almost all new TLD's will sell almost 85% in the one word category, 10% in the two word category and about 5% in 3 words and above. I am probably being generous with the last two percentages but it really hurts me when I see domainers registering two and 3 words in ANY new TLD.

The extension has a real chance at becoming the new number two to .com, especially because of google.

However, I still think ultimately you will see a lot of upgrades to .com if the company can afford it/ acquire the .com.

Having to say square.xyz is still quite a bit more cumbersome than saying square.com

This debate will probably go on forever but if I had to make a new business name I would rather make one up and use the .com than use the .xyz

MapleDots.xyz just does not carry as much weight as MapleDots.com

PS. All that said, if I can make money on one I will register it in a New York minute.

.xyz is so far mainly used by tech, crypto, blockchain, metaverse co’s. and many of those still have lots of money from funding rounds the past two years.

here we are in 2022, not enough one word .com’s out there for everyone, so new co’s have to use another extension if they want to be on a premium one word domain.

It's the same story - everyone wants a core 1-word brand and since .COM is either too expensive or already in use, they use an alt TLD.

Then that alt TLD gets hot, both expired and retail prices spike, so companies go looking for a new cheaper one. .CO, .IO, .XYZ... you just need to figure out which is next. .VC looks like it has some potential, as a lot of people view it as Venture Capital/Capitalists. .CC words might be in for a small run as well, as it's already popular in the NNN and CC areas.

I don't really understand this .xyz and their selling prices to be honest, other than as a fad like the latest crypto shitcoin. To have to explain your domain with dot-ex-why-zee is four syllables compared to dot-com in two syllables, or some of the other more pronounceable ones out there. I still think .com or your ccTLD makes the most sense.

Totally agree on the three sillyable o_O on that one with you but between Google and Square | Solutions For Your Small, Medium & Large Business and many other companies jumping on board .xyz has a lot of push.

Taken from the bottom of squareup.com, notice they are called Block Inc now.

They just bought block.xyz whereas block.com is used by crypto, so the exact opposite to .xyz being used for crypto.

Note block.xyz is not developed yet because of the legal challenge from H&R Block

I dug up this older article...

H&R Block sues Jack Dorsey's Block for trademark infringement | Domain Names

.xyz will probably overtake all other extensions and be the backup after .com

Yeah, who would've thought a weird extension like .xyz would take the runner up crown

It's all tied to Crypto and the .XYZ registry making the first effort to link up to ETH wallets - anyone could have done it and no one could have predicted which one.

I've had .com regret from the 2000's when you could have bought good one word .coms, LL.com, LLL.com, NN.com and NNNcom NNNN.com for what is considered peanuts today.

Now my next regret is not buying some good one word .xyz when they came out in 2014/15. Probably could have bought them really cheap in the aftermarket, if not hand regged. Before covid I bet they were pretty cheap too.
