Post expiry .ca transfers (1 Viewing)

I have never tried to transfer a .ca domain name after expiry.

I have a .ca that I just sold (at liquidation prices) - it is now 3 days expired and at Dynadot. I can still renew it there, but is it necessary to renew for it to transfer out to another registrar? On the Whois I see it now says owner transfer prohibited, so I wonder if that i what it means?

Thank for any help from those with experience in post-expiry transfer.

No, but you will have to contact the registrar to get them to unlock the domain for transfer... which may open up another kettle of fish.

Some registrars will let you do a push, then the new owner can renew.

It is through a third party so I don't have that option of staying at registrar.
Dynadot policy seems to be you have to renew to unlock the domain name again, but still waiting for confirmation from them.

Try requesting an authorization code first, and if it's possible/works, then check to see if the domain is unlocked.

I just ran tests on 2 expired .CAs I had at GD, one of which was in redemption period. I couldn't unlock the domains from the user interface, but I was able to request an auth code and then the domain unlocked automatically. Try that out and see if it works for you.

ps: At first it said "error yada generic yada nothing specific", but then poof, I started getting emails for the auth code and confirming the unlock as well.

I was actually surprised to learn this, but GD is fact super lenient when it comes expired .CA domains. You can even renew on the very last day with no additional fees.

Anyway, let us know what you learn. It's an interesting topic and would be nice to know whether there are any specific rules/policies that apply (or are supposed to apply) across the board, or whether it's completely random and varies by registrar.

Now that I check GD again, and for the record, I don't think it unlocks domains in the final redemption period but it's definitely possible for domains recently expired and in the "recoverable" period (which is the first 45 days I believe).

You're only 3 days in the expiry period so you should be able to get help with this. If they try to give you the run around just tell them how GD would allow it without having to contact support.
