Hello fellow domainers,

Greetings from .de (Germany)!

I've been in the domaining game just a few years now (~3yrs to be exact), managing a modest portfolio of around 800 domains, mostly .de . I'm currently looking to broaden my horizons. Here in Germany, our domain community is relatively small, and we even have our own forum. However, we often find ourselves circling around the same topics, so I've decided to venture into the international waters of domaining.

@MapleDots and the admins of our German forum have set up a link exchange, and I was curious to see what's happening in Canada and the USA, on the other side of the ocean.

One of the first things I noticed is the stark difference in pricing for .ca and .com domains compared to what we're used to with .de domains. The prices here are significantly higher, but of course, .com reigns supreme with the whole world as its target audience. Another interesting observation I made while lurking in your forum is that hyphenated domains seem to be a uniquely German preference and seems to be a no-go in .com

We often use hyphens to separate words, especially in keyword-city.de domains. It's fascinating to see how domain preferences vary from country to country.

I'm joining with more than just curiosity; I'm also hoping to draw some international attention to a tool I've developed for domainers (tldboy.com). Its free.
MapleDots has assured me that anything domain-related is welcome here, and I'll be making a separate post about that tool later on.

I'm eager to see what I can discover and learn here about international domaining.

BR
Michael

Asking and getting are two different things :ROFLMAO:

I have mentioned that before, unfortunately on this side of the pond you cannot give away a hyphenated domain.

We are an open community, very much self moderated, you are welcome anytime.

Nice to see you posting, it was nice chatting with you before, I am a fan of the .de forum, it's a pleasant community. (y)

Hi Michael,

Welcome to DN! From what I have seen, .de has been doing so well because of the sales I see. Sedo is doing a good job at making those sales happen.

.ca pricing: I price mine based on number of end users or 10-15% value the .com domain.

Welcome to DN.ca Michael!

Moin Michael, willkommen an bord :)

Is domainfragen now the de facto forum for German domainers?

Is domainfragen now the de facto forum for German domainers?

Hello Frank,

Before I entered the playground, there was ConsultDomain, and from what I have been told, CD died because of reasons. People were not nice to each other, there were entrenched positions, unnecessary political discussions, and operators who wanted to steer the project in the wrong direction.

The domainfragen forum today was founded a few years ago as an alternative by the owners of EliteDomains, and the moderators are all veteran domainers. We place great importance on kindness and try to avoid any political discussions that have nothing to do with domains. Gradually, the old major domainers are returning slowly.

Such a small world. We‘ve been missing you at the last „Stammtisch“
Then ones in Hamburg by Jens? I've attended one or two or three of those :)

Domaining is a small world indeed.

Yes, Jens is the man who truly knows everyone and does a lot for the community. The "Stammtisch" is organized twice a year, the next one is on June 14, 2024, so if you happen to be in the area, come around...

I've been invited by Helmut from DNForum and Acorn to attend the Domain Summit early August in the UK.

Talking to my wife to see if we can turn it into a holiday because England, Ireland, Scotland are on my list of places to visit.

I can only highly recommend attending these in the Blockhaus and wherever they end up afterwards, always fun and great discussions.

One of them was a longer meeting with a boat tour etc, that was actually great fun too - I have fond memories and hope to attend one soon again.
