TBR Drop - Nov 8, 2023 (1.Viewing)

Due to unpopular demand, I'll post the prime MyID auction prices from yesterday and then maybe take a "TBR Tracking Break" til Christmas:

HardRock: $554
RTC: $911

I set $800 as my limit for HardRock.ca

So had that domain been at WHC or CatchDrop I would have bid it up to at least $800 and if action fever took over I might have stretched a tad.

So by it landing at MyID it actually undersold and the auction winner got a bargain,

Congratulations to whoever won it (y)

I was ready to bid higher on RTC, but like all TBR auctions, the minute I bid a whale bids higher, and then I bid again, and the same whale bids higher and so on and so on and so on...

I wasn't going to win it, so I saved some time and just let it go, and also congratulate the winner.

I don't see any mention of Doug Gray, who was by a large margin the biggest of the pre-CIRA .CA players, with a bunch of shell companies to be able to claim top level .CA domains while the system was still at UBC. . -Tom

p.s. pri.ca is currently bid up to $500

Yeah, Doug is a good guy. He's retired, sold off most of his stuff afaik, kept a few he's personally attached to.

Yes. Mr Douglas Gray was a pioneer indeed. He had several good quality domains in his portfolio which when he tried to liquidate was able to pick up from him directly. He was a great person and had no ego. And yes I remember those she’ll companies (numbered BC corporations) that held them. Great memories. Had to sacrifice everything I had then to own a little share of his portfolio.

BM:

PRI - $500

So it looks like someone stupidly tried to snipe PRI (it's at $500), so I guess that means another 24 hours added on?

It says "finished" but it's going to be restarted, right? Or did BM change their procedures?

@bmetal
Sorry, no. Last and winning bid on pri.ca was 7am on Nov 9th. Not sure why you think it was sniped...

Sorry, no. Last and winning bid on pri.ca was 7am on Nov 9th. Not sure why you think it was sniped...

I got mixed up with the "(Sniping)" message that was on there during the last 10 (?) minutes but then I realized it was just a warning that any bid placed would result in a Sniping Penalty.

Is this a time penalty, i.e. adding time to the auction, or something else?
We just extend the auction by 24 hours. It's a consequence of the "sell at 2nd highest bid" sale price/model. If you throw in a bid at the last second, you know you won't have to pay it (either you won't win, or you'd win at the lower bid's price).

2nd highest bid is more commonly done in silent auctions, but the lack of trust in the TBR world suggested that wasn't an option, and the whole idea of using it was a simple alternative to proxy bidding. (It's on the to-be-replaced list.)
