... so, I didn't expect to drop in on such an interesting thread. Thanks for the praise DomainRecap. And to "theinvestor" you can only be let in on an auction if there is one. Certainly some of the business models don't include an auction (for some/most domains) after the registration.
BM actually changed their position to "open auctions" for anyone with a BM account, but I think they still need to manually add your ID.
Since anyone can setup an account (for free), I'd call it "open auctions" for $200 domains. I spent some time looking at "fixing" the "manually add your BM account", but it got buried under other tasks.
This was an unusual year with CIRA finally releasing domains that had been held back due to complications with the two levels of domains issues. I can't complain, we had some remarkable successes, and yes, thank you MapleDots for playing with us.
I want to write a lecture about "zero sum" games (you can't win unless someone else loses), but I've either had too much or too little to drink. The Registrars know darn well they are shooting at a limited number of domains. WHC has way more threads than anyone else (I don't think CD is any bigger than BM, and I'm staring our renewal options in the face.) You folks probably know better than I do what happened to MyID. The only way to expand the game is for the folks selling retail (that's you guys/gals) to find new/more markets. That said, I've said it before, I'll say it again because it's frigging obvious, you folks should be forming cooperative teams where you can. Share info, decide ahead of time who will win an auction, move some of the profit into your own hands from the registrars.
DomainRecap ... "meat and potatoes". It takes a VERY LARGE number of "normal" domains to generate the same kind of returns that a single "twitter.ca" does... so IMHO it's hard to decide whether the potatoes are in the run-of-the-mill registrations, or the high value ones. It's something I face every week when I have to figure out what to put in the "launch map" for the first wave of registrations. You renew your domains here, and for that we are thankful... not everyone does.
