thought this was funny/sad at the same time

2yrs back I sold a 50% share in two domains for cash, made sense at the time to put them in the other persons acc for safekeeping due to me struggling with renewals

last year this person died......failed attempts with the trustee to get ownership so today I look.....yikes its due to expire shortly, so I ask if I can renew these domains until the trustee sorts out the paperwork,

yep, I can....so I renew the domains......then I ask the protocol and documentation required to the registrar, they respond that i need approval from [NAME-REMOVED-PER-REQUEST] (ET).....$%#$$## that's not the person i sold 50% share too

so I paid ET's renewal on two domains

one of these domains was dangerously close to TBR.......so??

Which two domains Ian and at which Registrar? Care to share?

Bill of sale stating facts....

always send an invoice/bill of sale stating the specifics of the sale.

He owns quite a few .ca's

Looks to me like your domain may have been sold.

Wish you had communicated directly though.

Looks like Mr 50% sold the domains to ol' [NAME-REMOVED-PER-REQUEST], pocketed the entire sum himself, then went and died before you could find out and extract your pound of flesh. The perfect crime.

You should turn this into a novel.

Love the way this novel in evolving.

Except it kinda sucks to find out that you're named in someone else's novel. I just hope for your sake it ends as more of a comedy caper than a thriller/murder mystery! :D

The OP asked me to edit the name from the posts, the new owner of the domains asked to have it removed.

At dn.ca we respect everyone's privacy so the edits were made.

[notify]iancc[/notify] I hope that is satisfactory

It's sounding like the plot for Knives Out 2!

Thank you @admin for helping out.

Thought of clarifying the situation too.

I had requested the original poster to let me know the names of the two domains and the Registrar who had requested consent. I did not get any details from [notify]iancc[/notify] except for an apology.

Also, there was no such 50/50 deal between the OP and myself and hence my name getting associated with such a claim was unfair.

Hence the request

I don't think this ever happened, as least what I could read from the thread.

But I do agree your name really had no place in the thread, as Mr 50% is obviously the (dead) bad guy in this caper.

Actually. it was more of a lesson when having a friend buy into some domains.......at the time it made perfect sense, I needed some cash and they wanted to be part of a future domain sale (possible double/triple $$), so that was good......having that friend pass away and having to ask the estate for access was problematic morally

The fact that the domain is now owned by another person is good, I considered it a good name so chances are it hit TBR or a sale was made, regardless it's a good domain and in ET hands so congrats

DistilleryDistrict.ca (in the drops today was the other domain name)

I have been on forums for over 20 years, and been witness to countless shouting matches.

It takes a Canadian forum to show them how it is done. No shouting, no hurt feelings, we just do what is right for the members.

I am quite happy to see how this ended up.

Congratulations to everyone for staying cool

I agree, it was a very interesting story to read about. The only mistake made was mentioning the 3rd party without him having a chance to be informed first and sort out what happened. But I'm certainly glad the story was told as its always good to understand the potential predicaments that a creative deal like that can end up in.

I know I've done non-standard deals with other domainers where it was done simply on each man's word. Of course if one of the parties dies, that really makes it tough for one of them to live up to their word. Given the option between feeling screwed vs dead - its pretty clear which side you're happy to be on! I guess the lesson is, never make a creative deal where you give up ownership without realizing there's a chance you'll never get it (or anything for it) back.

This might actually be a very interesting topic - to share any non-standard deals that have worked out well or gone sour or TBD.
