Dave Evanson, the "Senior Sales & Brokerage Consultant" for Sedo.com, announced an hour ago that he "just brokered" ZAG.com for $450K USD.

I was wondering if the company ZigZag bought it but the domain already forwards to ZAG-INC.com (which didn't take long if he "just brokered" it). I never heard of this company before but I guess they are called "ZAG - Happy Inspired". It seems like they're involved in all kinds of stuff, but mostly animation/ music/ publishing/ entertainment for kids. They have a few offices in Los Angeles and one in Paris too.

The last sale Dave announced on Twitter was Spectacle.com, although he didn't exactly specify he brokered it. You can check out his Twitter page here:

Thought I'd also point out how the buyer, ZAG-INC.com, had a somewhat terrible domain (imo) with a hyphen in it. Makes me think they were tired of their domain and figured it was time for an upgrade. It'll be interesting to see if they make the switch or will just use ZAG.com as a redirect to ZAG-INC.COM.

I think it was a pretty fair deal too. The Z at the beginning isn't great, but the G at the end is, and it's pronounceable... with the nice letter A in the middle.

To add some perspective, AAF.com sold for 45,050 USD just a couple days ago (Jan 30th, 2021), which is a killer deal if you ask me. There is an important distinction between the two sales though, which is that ZAG was bought by an enduser and AAF sold in expired auction at Dropcatch (which means it was most certainly bought by a domain investor). Funny thing about AAF.com is that it was in auction a couple weeks ago and sold for $80,150 USD, but they buyer didn't pay so they had to restart the auction (and it went for 35K less the second time around).

I think people often get too hung up on the "letters" and "order' etc of company names/brands. The bottom line, it's their brand and it works for them. In terms of the price, it seems it worked for both parties so all is well. :)

yes, the one guy I know who did exactly that has a portfolio worth around 9 figures just at wholesale prices.

In the mid-90's I should have put money into LL.com's, but I was young and (naturally) unemployed, and domains were $80-$100 to register at the time, so I only bought one for a site I was developing.

But even then I understood the allure of a short domain name.

Zag.com – $450,000
The sale of Zag.com will rank as one of the largest sales of 2021. As of writing, DNJournal ranks Zag.com as the third-largest of this year, but the recent six- and seven-figure sales at the ROTD auction may push Zag.com down.

Zag.com was acquired by Zag America LLC, a creative company with ventures in animation, music, and entertainment. Zag’s store, aptly named Zag Store, has 136,000 Instagram followers. The company uses several domains at the moment including Zag-inc.com and Zag-Store.com.

While Zag.com currently forwards to Zag-inc.com, the company may choose to replace Zag-inc.com with Zag.com at some point.

Three-letter, pronounceable dot-com domain names do sell for six-figures apiece, so it’s certainly not unusual to see Zag.com sell for $450,000. In the past year, for example, we’ve seen Nas.com sell for $720,000 and Mim.com for $131,410.

Sedo sold Zag.com on behalf of TrueCar Inc., a publicly-traded automotive pricing website that owns and operates True.com. TrueCar was a brand created by Zag.com Inc. in 2008, with the brands merging in 2010.
