An old friend of mine from Toronto used to own hype dot com, used it for his Web/tech company, but sold domain a long time ago... Amazing name/domain in both .ca and .com. Good luck to the bidders!

Realistically if I was still in purchase mode I would think nothing of dropping 10k on this one.
Go in, bid 10k and see who else competes, in the end the domain is worth it.
Fortunately for me I am not actively purchasing anymore unless I need it for a project, so this one is not tempting me.

However, I would rather renew 1000 domains in my portfolio for one year (or 500 domains for two years and so on) instead of bidding 10K on this domain. Because in my experience the chances of getting a request for that one domain in multiples of what I have bid on TBR is far slimmer than me getting a request for one of the domains I renewed, and selling it for XXX of the cost. That is what I have come to realize and has been my strategy these days. But we can leave them to our family to inherit and so on. But how many should one leave as inheritance?
To each his own - I quite understand. So it's totally up to the person who is bidding to decide, if he/she is to go for more or preserve what they already have.

I think it’s not so much that the strategy of paying 10K for domains is a bad strategy. It’s more about the fact that buying a .CA for 10K isn’t a great strategy long term.
Those paying big money today may squeeze themselves into owning very few domains. If I would spend 10K today it would have to be because I thought it was a steal or it’s a .com.

Any domainer that buys Hype.ca needs to factor in the cost of tying up that level of cash for years (or decades?) before a sufficiently-motivated buyer comes along. There's no question it's a monster of a domain, but it could be a long wait before the *right* buyer (with the right budget) comes calling. The 'best' deployment of 10k is going to vary from domainer to domainer, but for many they would be safer buying 10 x $1k TBR domains or 20 x $500 TBR domains instead.
Good luck to whoever wins that domain. And good luck to those steering clear of it for strategic purposes!

The smart thing most of us did was purchase these domains many years ago and now many of the domains we own are worth more than 10k a piece. Would I pay 10k for every one of those domains today if I didn’t buy them years ago? No way. Because I’m still sitting on the majority of them today.
hype.com is an energy drink company, makes perfect sense.

Sure does; but try convincing them to buy a .CA. There are many .com owners that just don’t care and can do without the .CA. So typically your end user is someone who can’t get the .com so they end up paying for the .ca. That has been the majority of my experience.

Also, most companies with an existing two word .CA won't ever consider upgrading to the better one-word. But then again, that's because we price those one words at a point where only a few companies could afford them.
