Personally, I just look at what I own.

Mostly my country code .ca then .com's with a few .net, .org, .app sprinkled in.

However I managed to my first .xyz to actual use on our marketplace, that's the first extension outside .ca and .com for us to achieve this for me.

Other than that I own one more targeted .xyz and in most cases I buy those only with a possible end user in mind.

More and more now I tell domainers go ahead and register if you can think of 1-3 possible end users. If you cannot think of at least one then chances are you will be renewing for a long time.

Almost all new TLD's will sell almost 85% in the one word category, 10% in the two word category and about 5% in 3 words and above. I am probably being generous with the last two percentages but it really hurts me when I see domainers registering two and 3 words in ANY new TLD.

The extension has a real chance at becoming the new number two to .com, especially because of google.

However, I still think ultimately you will see a lot of upgrades to .com if the company can afford it/ acquire the .com.

Having to say square.xyz is still quite a bit more cumbersome than saying square.com

This debate will probably go on forever but if I had to make a new business name I would rather make one up and use the .com than use the .xyz

MapleDots.xyz just does not carry as much weight as MapleDots.com

PS. All that said, if I can make money on one I will register it in a New York minute.

.xyz is so far mainly used by tech, crypto, blockchain, metaverse co’s. and many of those still have lots of money from funding rounds the past two years.

here we are in 2022, not enough one word .com’s out there for everyone, so new co’s have to use another extension if they want to be on a premium one word domain.
